Job description

Location: Johor

To assist the Senior WSHE Manager in oversee and coordinate the company’s environmental compliance, management, and sustainability programs across all project sites, supervising Environmental Officers assigned at site level while driving initiatives to achieve sustainability recognition and certification for the company within the local construction industry.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Environmental Compliance (Malaysia, Construction Industry Relevant):

  • Ensure company and project sites comply with Environmental Quality Act 1974, EIA conditions, DOE and local authority requirements.
  • Monitor and oversee environmental compliance at all project sites, including: Scheduled waste management, Noise and vibration monitoring, Dust and air quality monitoring, Surface water, silt trap, and erosion & sedimentation control, Chemical management and diesel storage compliance, Environmental incident/complaint management and reporting.
  • Liaise with DOE, local councils (Majlis), and other regulatory bodies for inspections, audits, and submissions.

2. Supervision of Environmental Officers:

  • Supervise and mentor Environmental Officers assigned at each project site.
  • Monitor and evaluate their performance, ensuring: Timely submission of site environmental reports, Effective implementation of Environmental Management Plans (EMP) at site, Corrective and preventive actions are closed on time and Compliance with the company’s WSHE-MS and ISO 14001 procedures.
  • Conduct regular site visits and environmental audits to ensure Environmental Officers maintain compliance and reporting quality.

3. Environmental Monitoring & Reporting:

  • Consolidate site-level environmental data for management reporting.
  • Analyse environmental monitoring results, identify trends, and escalate concerns for improvement actions.
  • Prepare environmental performance reports for management, DOE, clients, and certification bodies.

4. Sustainability Programs & Initiatives:

  • Develop, implement, and monitor sustainability initiatives aligned with the company’s ESG
  • objectives, such as: Waste reduction and recycling initiatives, Energy and water conservation programs at project sites and offices, Green building practices (GBI, LEED, etc.) where applicable, and Biodiversity and community environmental initiatives.
  • Drive programs to achieve sustainability certifications and recognition (ISO 14001, ESG ratings, GBI, etc.).
  • Facilitate training and awareness programs for project teams on environmental and sustainability practices.

5. Other Responsibilities:

  • Support Senior WSHE Manager in periodic policy and procedure reviews.
  • Participate in management meetings to present environmental performance and improvement plans.
  • Assist in tender submissions related to environmental and sustainability requirements.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of local environmental regulations and global sustainability trends.

Education: Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or related discipline.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5-10 years in environmental management within the construction industry in Malaysia.
  • Familiarity with DOE compliance, EIA monitoring, and local authority environmental requirements.
  • Experience supervising or mentoring junior environmental personnel is an advantage.

Certifications: Preferably Certified Environmental Professional (CESSWI, CICEC, CePSWaM) or equivalent. CePEOEIA – added value.

Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of environmental laws in Malaysia.
  • Competent in data analysis, reporting, and use of monitoring equipment.
  • Good communication, training, and leadership skills.
