Job description

Sunway University is seeking a dynamic Lead Learning Designer to lead the design and development of high-quality online and blended learning experiences that meet Sunway University’s standards and external accreditation requirements.

The Lead Learning Designer provides academic, pedagogical, and technical leadership for the design and development of Sunway Online courses and the online learning components that support blended and technology-enhanced delivery of conventional on-campus programmes. The role oversees the full learning design lifecycle, from planning and scoping through build, testing, delivery, review, and continuous enhancement to ensure that Sunway University’s online and blended learning offerings are pedagogically robust, technically sound, learner-centered, and scalable, while leading a team of Learning Designers and collaborating with academics and key stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the design and development of high-quality online and blended learning experiences, applying established instructional design models and learning theories.

Set and continuously improve learning design standards, templates, and workflows for Sunway Online and blended components, and review outputs to provide structured feedback on pedagogy, interaction, and technical quality.

Mentor and develop the Learning Design team, fostering innovation, reflective practice, and continuous improvement.

Advance Technical & Platform Management

Oversee course and module builds across LMS platforms (Canvas, Blackboard) and related digital environments, ensuring smooth implementation.

Guide effective use of digital tools and authoring platforms (H5P, Articulate Rise/Storyline) to create interactive, scenario-based, and gamified learning activities.

Ensure integration of SCORM, LTI tools, and multimedia components, resolving complex technical issues in collaboration with IT and vendors.

Pedagogical Governance, Quality & Accessibility

Ensure alignment of online and blended learning components with learning outcomes, assessments, credit weightings, and workload expectations.

Apply evidence-based frameworks (e.g., Cognitive Load Theory, Multimedia Learning Theory, UDL) to guide learning design decisions and maintain quality standards.

Lead quality assurance, usability testing, and continuous improvement cycles, informed by analytics, feedback, and best practices, ensuring compliance with institutional standards and external accreditation requirements.

Collaboration with Academics & Programme Leadership

Partner with Programme Leaders and academics to develop fully online programmes and integrate effective online elements into on-campus courses.

Facilitate design conversations to clarify learning outcomes, assessments, activities, and weekly flows for online and blended delivery.

Provide evidence-based recommendations to enhance engagement, learning effectiveness, and retention through strategic digital learning approaches

Stakeholder & Partner Management

Coordinate with internal stakeholders (IT, QA, student support, marketing, etc.) to ensure smooth development, implementation, and maintenance of online and blended learning offerings.

Manage external partners and vendors for content development and platform services, ensuring compliance with pedagogical standards, technical requirements, and timelines.

Identify and elevate risks and opportunities, proposing practical solutions for online and blended learning initiatives.

Project Oversight, Documentation & Reporting

Manage multiple learning design projects, ensuring milestones, quality standards, timelines, and deliverables are met, while maintaining accurate documentation for audits and reviews.

Prepare reports, briefs, and presentations on learning design quality, innovation, and digital/blended education initiatives as required.

Requirements

Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Education, or related field. Candidates with a PhD is an added advantage.

5 years of experience in online/blended learning design, including leadership or project management.

Proven track record in designing and delivering high-quality online courses and blended components.

Proficiency in LMS platforms such as Canvas and Blackboard.

Strong skills with authoring tools (H5P, Articulate Rise, Articulate Storyline).

Deep understanding of learning theories, instructional design models, and digital and blended pedagogy.

Experience collaborating with academics, internal teams, and external partners in higher education.

Excellent project management and stakeholder engagement skills.

High attention to quality, learner experience, and accessibility.

Clear, confident communication, strong pedagogical judgement and ability to bridge academic practices with digital innovation.
