Job summary

A local recreational organization is seeking a Seasonal Lead Camp Counselor to create a safe and enjoyable environment for elementary school children during summer activities. Responsibilities include supervising children, planning themed activities, and communicating with parents. Candidates must have a high school diploma, two years of related experience, and be at least 18 years old. Starting pay is $17.00 per hour, and certification in First Aid/CPR is preferred.

Job Summary

The Seasonal Lead Camp Counselor is responsible for providing a fun and safe environment for elementary school children during the summer which includes supervision and interaction with children and organizing activities.

Essential Functions
  • Act as Camp SUN Manager when Supervisor/Director is unavailable or at separate site
  • Meet with staff and lead meetings as necessary
  • Assist in creation and planning of summer schedule
  • Responsible for keeping an accurate inventory of supplies and stocking as needed
  • Create and update medical and allergy lists for campers
  • Responsible for creating rosters, sign-ins and emergency contact information
  • Prepare counselors for daily and weekly activities
  • Communicate with parents regarding any concerns or questions they may have
  • Enforce camp rules with campers for appropriate behavior, give out rewards and discipline as needed
  • Work with Fox Valley Special Recreation Association as needed
  • Plan themed week activities
  • Actively participate in all activities and field trips (includes supervision in aquatics environment) with children
  • Drive bus/van for field trips
  • Interact with children individually as needed, games and conversations
  • Set-up and clean-up of snack
  • Help clean and maintain facilities, i.e. sweep, wipe tables, wash dishes, etc.
  • Perform all other duties and tasks as assigned within guidelines and rules of District’s safety program.
Education and Experience

This position requires a High School diploma and two years of experience in working with children. Applicants must be 18 years or older. Candidates studying education in college is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • First Aid/CPR certified
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Aptitude to deal with multiple children’s needs at the same time
  • Utilize positive behavior reinforcement with children
  • Capability to manage a variety of personalities and behaviors in children, i.e. shy, upset, high energy
  • Ability to communicate with parents and children
  • Physical ability to play with children in sports – including swimming
  • Understand and anticipate customer’s needs as well as support a customer service environment
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to portray a professional image of the District
  • Capability to engage and manage children in group activities
Physical requirements and Work Environment

Majority of time spent standing, walking, and moving. Activities are performed both indoors and outdoors, exposure to weather conditions during field trips and outdoor play time activities including water. May be exposed to excessive noise from children, music. May be required to assist with set up of programs and classrooms which may include bending, reaching, lifting and carrying items up to 25 lbs. Starting: $17.00 per hour (hourly wage may vary with experience)
