Overview

Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Nurse Colposcopist to join the gynaecology outpatients team. The role provides high-quality care for women accessing our services and works collaboratively within the team.

Main duties of the job
  • Independently perform colposcopic examinations in line with BSCCP standards.
  • Improve standards of care and promote a seamless service within the multidisciplinary professional framework through clinical practice, Colposcopy management, education, research and audit activities, aligned to directorate and corporate objectives within the clinical governance framework.

Job responsibilities
  • Core Behaviours and Skills – Communicate effectively within the clinical multi-disciplinary team to contribute to the smooth running of the service, work with team members to ensure effective delivery of care, communicate with patients and carers for active involvement in the Colposcopy visit, and develop external networks to share best practice within Colposcopy.
  • Collaborate with departments such as GPs, practice nurses, cytology and histopathology laboratories, Contractor Service Agency and GUM; participate in Colposcopy, Cytology and Histopathology MDT meetings and prepare case summaries.
  • Core Knowledge and Understanding – Understand local and national nursing agendas, relevant National Service Frameworks (if appropriate), CHFT guidelines and policies, and organisational structures.
  • Principal Duties & Areas of Responsibility – Participate in planning and development of the Colposcopy service with Lead Nurse Colposcopist and Lead clinician; act in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Code of Conduct; manage own caseload autonomously within the multidisciplinary team; recognise and act on situations detrimental to health and wellbeing; handle complaints and incidents at departmental level and report as required; interpret clinical information pertaining to Colposcopy and apply NHSCSP guidelines to meet patient needs; support data acquisition and validation for the Colposcopy service including KC65; ensure patient and carer education is integral to care; maintain a high standard of patient environment.
  • Responsibilities for patient care – Demonstrate high level of knowledge and skills in Colposcopy, work as part of the MDT, provide education to patients and carers, and contribute to a supportive educational environment for staff and learners.
  • Freedom to act – Work independently in Colposcopy within the NMC Code, NHS Cervical Screening Programme (NHSCP) guidelines and BSCCP guidelines; maintain and improve professional knowledge and contribute to Clinical Governance; contribute to policies and procedures within the Colposcopy service; comply with NMC Code and Trust policies.
  • Communication – Maintain effective communication within the MDT, involve patients and carers in care, develop external networks, and participate in MDT review meetings with case summaries.
  • Education and Training – Provide health promotion and preventive advice (eg cervical screening, contraception, sexual health), educate on Colposcopy and management of cervical abnormalities, educate patients, carers and colleagues, and foster a culture of lifelong learning and CPD.
  • Leadership and Management – Model high professional standards and support clinical expertise development within the team; manage a caseload of patients with low- and high-grade cervical disease.
  • Research and Development – Participate in departmental audit/research as required, apply research findings to practice, identify audit opportunities and contribute to departmental processes.

Qualifications / Training
  • NMC Registered Nurse in relevant field of practice
  • BSCCP accreditation
  • Evidence of further study at master’s level or equivalent (eg Postgraduate Diploma in Colposcopy training) or equivalent

  • Mentorship or equivalent teaching and assessing qualification
