Therapeutic Radiographer Apprenticeship Job Opportunity

The University Hospitals Leicester NHS Trust, Radiotherapy Department is excited to offer the opportunity for 2 Apprentice Therapeutic Radiographers to join our team. This is an exciting career development opportunity to join our wonderful team at the Radiotherapy Department in the Leicester Royal Infirmary. As an Apprentice Therapeutic Radiographer you will gain on the job experience and knowledge of radiotherapy service delivery. This will include patient care, pre‑treatment, planning, delivery of precise radiation treatment plans and quality assurance of treatment plans and equipment. In addition there will be at least a minimum of 20% protected time (1 day) for university attendance, distance learning or any other educational activities. The radiotherapy department is fully committed to supporting the trainee’s education and professional development through their apprenticeship period and post qualification.

Main Duties of the Job
  • Work closely with the therapeutic radiography team to coordinate the efficient, accurate patient focused planning and delivery of ionising radiation following evidence based protocols within agreed scope of practice
  • Participate in the organisation of the daily workload to optimise the throughput of activity
  • Assist the team in the re‑assignment of activity in the event of machine breakdowns or unexpected events such as fire alarms
  • Be able to participate in service improvement projects including working with the multidisciplinary team
  • To participate in presentations when appropriate, promoting knowledge and awareness of radiotherapy, developing the service as one team
  • To convey and receive messages accurately and in a timely fashion
  • To safely collect and deliver notes/x‑rays/specimens etc. to and from hospital departments to allow patient clinics to run smoothly
  • To act as a chaperone and escort for patients between Radiotherapy and other areas/departments within the hospital
  • To assist in all clinical areas as required
  • To undertake administrative duties, including filing, distribution of mail, booking of appointments as requested by qualified staff
  • To update the Aria data system with relevant patient data, ensuring the Radiotherapy Planning and Treatment areas are kept informed of patients’ arrival and subsequent movements within the department

Apprenticeship Programme Details (Level 6 Therapeutic Radiographer Apprenticeship)
  • Work within the Radiotherapy department on the Level 6 Therapeutic Radiographer Apprenticeship programme delivered by Sheffield Hallam University whilst remaining under the employment of the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust
  • Work alongside the Radiotherapy Multi‑Disciplinary team in ensuring delivery of safe care which adheres to our trust values
  • Work under the supervision of registered operators at all times
  • Under supervision as part of the multi‑disciplinary team, the apprentice will fulfil a key role in providing radiotherapy, care and support to individuals as specified in standard radiotherapy protocols
  • Attend mandatory block study time for the Therapeutic Radiographer Apprenticeship programme as directed by SHU (Sheffield Hallam University)
  • Attend in person or virtual tutorials, webinars and complete all e‑learning as instructed by SHU (Sheffield Hallam University)
  • Attend tutorials, teaching and CPD events arranged by the radiotherapy department as directed by the assigned assessor/practice educator/work‑based mentor
  • Ensure that the Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017, IRMER 2017 and associated codes of practice and guidance notes, together with the Health and Safety at Work Act, are understood and adhered to in respect of staff, patients and members of the public
  • Work within agreed boundaries and scope of practice adhering to Trust policy, local protocols and national guidance at all times
  • Be able to recognise situations where additional support or guidance is required and is proactive in seeking this
  • Report any fault errors immediately following departmental processes and highlight to the supervising Therapeutic Radiographer
  • Work a variety of shift patterns to support service delivery
  • The Apprentice therapeutic radiographer will be required to work as a member of the team in all areas of the department
  • Follow a patient centred approach to patient care
  • The apprentice therapeutic radiographer will acknowledge and fulfil the requirements of their CPD
  • Attend mandatory progress review meetings at which a member of the UHL and SHU teams will be present as per the apprenticeship funding rules
  • Successful completion of the apprenticeship, including the end point assessment, will lead to BSc (Hons) Therapeutic Radiography qualification
  • Candidates will then be able to apply for HCPC registration and pursue a career as a band 5 therapeutic radiographer
  • Safely use highly complex treatment machines costing in excess of £2 million
  • Responsible and accurate claim of associated study expenses as part of the apprenticeship programme
Budget, Staff, Policy and Communication (Key Policies)
  • Manage own CPD
  • Work under supervision as part of multidisciplinary team
  • Undertake radiotherapy processes within a defined scope of practice under supervision from a HCPC registered Radiographer
  • To comply with all Trust policies and procedures
  • To be aware and comply with the Local Rules of the Radiotherapy Department in compliance with the Ionising Radiation Regulations
  • To conform to the requirements of the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations IRMER
  • Be aware of changes to procedures and policies within the department
  • To actively engage with the Quality Management System
  • The post holder is an apprentice undertaking a training role to qualify as a therapeutic radiographer. After 3 years training and successful completion they will be expected
  • To communicate with a variety of healthcare professionals
  • Be able to communicate sensitively with cancer patients, relatives and carers that have recently received bad news or coming to terms with their diagnosis
  • Communicate sensitively with patients that have additional needs for example; Dementia, mobility issues, physical/mental/emotional changes due to their diagnosis
  • To promote effective communication amongst staff to create a good working environment
