About the Engagement:
Our client seeks a seasoned Operations & Maintenance Expert with direct, hands-on experience in hot molten salt systems used in solar thermal or thermal energy storage plants. The appointment is part of a three-member expert panel tasked with determining technical issues related to alleged defects in molten salt storage tanks.
Role Overview:
The selected expert will provide specialist insight into the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of molten salt thermal storage systems, focusing particularly on tank performance, reliability, and lifecycle management. The expert will help assess operational practices, maintenance records, and system integrity to inform the panel's findings.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct independent review of operations and maintenance practices for molten salt storage systems.
- Analyze operational data, incident logs, and maintenance history to identify possible causes of tank defects or failures.
- Evaluate operational integrity, temperature management, and maintenance regimes in relation to industry best practice.
- Assess failure modes, corrosion, leakage, and other degradation mechanisms associated with molten salt systems.
- Contribute to panel discussions and formulation of technical findings and recommendations.
- Participate in site visits, expert meetings, and deliberations under ICC rules.
- Prepare or support preparation of clear, evidence-based technical reports and opinions.
Required Qualifications & Experience:
- Extensive practical experience (typically 15+ years) in operation and maintenance of hot molten salt tanks or thermal energy storage systems.
- In-depth understanding of molten salt chemistry, heat transfer, and handling procedures at high temperature.
- Proven ability to diagnose operational issues, manage preventive and corrective maintenance, and ensure system reliability.
- Familiarity with safety, inspection, and monitoring protocols for high-temperature fluid systems.
- Strong written and analytical skills for reviewing technical documentation and preparing expert assessments.
Preferred Experience:
- Prior participation as a technical expert, advisor, or witness in engineering or industrial dispute resolution.
- Experience with solar thermal power plants or energy storage facilities utilizing molten salt.
- Professional registration or chartered engineering status preferred.
Personal Attributes:
- Recognized authority or senior practitioner in molten salt operations and maintenance.
- Objective, impartial, and detail-oriented approach.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills within multidisciplinary expert teams.
