About the role

Great Britain's electricity infrastructure is undergoing an ambitious, exciting and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, greener system, one that protects the planet and serves generations to come.

We are looking to recruit a lead project manager to assist in the delivery of the largest overhaul of the electricity grid in generations and more specifically to develop, sanction, deliver and close major projects to time, cost and specification in accordance with the National Grids Network Development Process.

Within the role, there is a key focus on ensuring health, safety and environmental issues are managed throughout the process and projects deliver the business’ regulatory, stakeholder and customer commitments.

The project is based in the south of England from Kent to Suffolk with the requirement to be on site for 4 days per week once in construction phase. There will also be travel to offices required.

What you'll do

  • Lead the National Grid investment process during pre-construction (including Development and Consenting processes), delivery and closure of projects of varying complexity.
  • Drive customer and stakeholder satisfaction through positive customer engagement where required and work pro-actively to resolve issues in a timely manner.
  • Develop, sanction and deliver the safest, most economical, optimal, efficient solution in line with CDM Regulations and SHESQ considerations.
  • Produce all required project documentation, ensuring governance is maintained throughout the investment process whilst also demonstrating the implementation of lessons learned and best practice.
  • Develop, implement, and manage project delivery, design, safety by design, commissioning, scheme closure and post-completion requirements.
  • Support the consenting, lands negotiations, type registration, cost estimation, programme risk mitigation and innovation activities to enable the delivery vehicle to implement the solution on site.
  • Assess the need for Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) or Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) support and where required, appoint and lead the ECI/FEED contractor in their activities. Monitor and control the budget and resolve any contractual issues in a timely manner.
  • Monitor and control the investment throughout the process providing regular project monthly status reports (including SHE performance, milestone progress, risk management) and accurate and timely financial forecasting information to support regulatory reporting, and business and capital planning.
  • Support the contract strategy and procurement process of projects entering delivery, to provide expertise following the production of competent Site and Works Information.
  • Manage and co-ordinate Contractors and project teams to successfully deliver projects to time, cost and specification and with minimal disruption.
  • Monitor Contractor site activities to ensure compliance with National Grid SHES standards, Health & Safety, Environmental legislation and CDM regulations
  • Manage the Contractor commissioning and performance testing process on site. Ensure the provision of accurate ‘as built’ documentation to handover of the assets onto the system to the standards defined in the design.
  • Manage standard and routine third-party issues, land, consents, grantors, public relations and Community stakeholders relationships to preserve National Grid reputation.
  • For customer schemes, supporting Customer Account Managers with the provision of information required to ensure customer offers are made in a timely manner to comply with the SO/TO Code requirements.
  • Maintain full authorisation to carry out duties. Enact the role of Client's Delegated Representative and where appropriate, Principle Designer or arrange for the provision of Principle Designer for each project as required under CDM Regulations.
  • Act as the NEC Project Manager (or equivalent for other contract types). Enact the role of Commissioning Panel Chair and work towards next level of authorisation where applicable and where experience allows
  • Mentor and train other Assistant / Project managers within the team.
  • Undertake additional duties to support team / region as delegated by the Senior Project Manager.
  • Undertake Delegation of Authority for Senior Project Managers as and when required.
