An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Chartered Physiotherapist with extensive paediatric experience within the NHS to join the Paediatric Physiotherapy Department based at the Sunflower Centre in Stourbridge.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will clinically lead, with colleagues, an area of the service for children referred, presenting with complex neurological/neuromuscular/orthopaedic conditions and take an advanced role in assessment and treatment. Additionally, there will be a requirement to lead on service development and provide clinical supervision for staff.

We have an inhouse orthotics clinic, casting clinic, hydrotherapy, CPIPs clinic and exercise groups for all ages. We are part of an active multidisciplinary team who work collaboratively to care for our patients.

The team have an imbedded in-service training programme and access to funding for external courses

Job responsibilities

Clinical:-

To be professional and legally responsible for all aspects of your own work.

To be responsible for managing your own caseload, including the waiting list, whilst ensuring a high standard of clinical care is provided for the patients you treat.

To treat children using a variety of specialised therapy techniques.

Support other junior members of the team in providing the above.

Analyse and understand impact on child/family, and on physiotherapy treatment, of various treatment plans/diagnosis from other disciplines.

Interpret and analyse clinical and non-clinical information to form accurate diagnosis and prognosis in a wide variety of complex paediatric conditions, particularly neuro-development, recommending treatment plans and interventions, developing comprehensive treatment packages. Providing spontaneous and planned advice.

To train, direct and supervise parents/carers and other agencies, respite carers, to perform physiotherapy techniques as part of child’s daily routine.

To comply with department standards, providing written communication, by way of comprehensive assessment reports to referring agents, the multidisciplinary team and parents/carers with on‑going follow‑up reports as deemed necessary by the Clinician.

To use verbal and non‑verbal communication skills to ensure, informed consent is gained, paying particular attention to families where there will often be difficulties with effective communication e.g. fear of those who may be unable to accept diagnosis, limited comprehensive skills, altered perception, experience and receptive dysphasia and when English not the first spoken language.

Be highly skilled in communicating with children of all ages and their families who have a range of physical and/or psychological basis to understanding and be able to motivate and persuade children with a range of complex conditions/disabilities to work with treatment programme.

To keep accurate patient records in accordance with CSP and Departmental Guidelines, including use of outcome measures.

To assess children for specific equipment and recommend purchase and use. Funding sourced from either own department, Commissioners, Social Services, Education or Charitable Trust

Professional:-

To develop and maintain skills required to practise physiotherapy at an advanced level. This will be by attending post graduate training, reflecting on own practise re: - Peer Groups, attending and being a member of Specialist Clinical Interest Groups.

To work autonomously and prioritise own work area, balancing all patient related and professional demands.

To maintain own clinical and professional development by ensuring you have an awareness of any new trends and developments within the specialism and wider aspects of physiotherapy and incorporate them as appropriate. These may be through CPD Diary in‑service training, lectures, courses, professional publications and peer review.

To contribute to the planning and delivery of in‑service training in a variety of ways on paediatric physiotherapy skills.

To communicate complex patient‑related information effectively, ensuring patient confidentiality, working collaboratively within the multi‑disciplinary team and with colleagues outside the NHS e.g. Education and Social Services to ensure delivery of co‑ordinated service.

To participate in the staff Personal Development Plan as both appraisee and appraiser.

To undertake Evidence Based Practice and Audit, leading others in doing so, including Manager, leading to recommendations being made to change clinical practice within the workplace.

To show sensitivity to cultural and social diversity. To be alert to the impact this may have on expectations and outcomes by reviewing data and respond accordingly.

Liaise with Higher Education Institutes to provide clinical education for Physiotherapy students. This will include attendance at appropriate meetings and courses.

To demonstrate a sound understanding of Clinical Governance and Risk Management.

Have sound working knowledge of current Safeguarding Policies/Issues, in order to have safe working practises for both yourself and patient, enabling timely reporting to appropriate agencies.

Organisational:-

To be responsible for a designated area of work, as agreed by Paediatric Physiotherapy Manager.

To manage own diary and work as an effective time manager.

To take a lead role in the organisation and management of specific clinics i.e. orthotics, gait, casting, ensuring availability of all resources required to perform the tasks.

To assist the clinical physiotherapy manager in future planning and development of service.

To take a lead role in both interviewing and the induction process of new staff and to facilitate their instruction in specialist skills required for the job.

To be responsible for all equipment issued by the department by adhering to departmental policy including competence of own staff to use and ensure the safe use of equipment by others through teaching, training and supervision of practice.

To be responsible for the maintenance of equipment used by the department for assessment or loan, ensuring records are kept in accordance with Departmental Policy.

To provide statistical information as required by Clinical Paediatric Physiotherapy Manager or Trust.

To undertake any other duties of a similar nature consistent with the responsibilities of the post in order to provide a high level quality service for the children of Dudley.
