Job Summary
The Defence College for Military Capability Integration (DCMCI) is one of the key operating units of the Defence Academy. DCMCI trains the UKs Armed Forces as well as Civil Servants, International Allies and Industry Partners, focusing on the ‘technological edge’, leveraging the technology and information necessary to thrive in an increasingly interconnected, complex and ambiguous strategic and operating environment.Defence has published many key strategies that recognise the importance of upskilling our workforce, particularly in emerging technologies and capabilities that are necessary to sustain MOD’s competitive advantage and/or be potential game changers in future operations and delivery. These include Cyber, Space, Data, Climate Change & Sustainability and AI/Autonomy. Delivering this upskilling however requires detailed planning and investment, often working across wider government and the industrial and academic supply chain to define and resource the training/education programmes necessary to deliver their aspirations.
Reporting to DCMCI COO the post holder will be responsible for the management of future projects and programmes.
Assistant Head Development is an exciting role that will drive DCMCI’s future delivery portfolio. This will involve forging and continuation of strategic relationships with our stakeholders, and then defining and delivering future projects.
The primary focus on taking up the role will be the future Technical Academic Provider (TAP) project, which is a critical role due to the current contract end date of 2028. The post holder will act as a Champion for project delivery across the College sharing knowledge and best practice.

- Defining and project managing the Future Technical Academic Provider project and approach.
- Defining and securing resources to develop the training and education.
- Defining and delivering in support of schools, future training design and development projects and wider DCMCI projects.

- Working with stakeholders to understand and refine current and future requirements.
- Forging and maintaining strategic partnerships and relationships with all internal and external stakeholders including suppliers and partners.

- Working closely with the Defence Academy Portfolio Office feeding into the Future Academic Provider programme.
Leadership
- Providing confident, inspiring, and empowering leadership, supporting colleagues across the college and wider Academy.
- Championing and leading by example in every aspect of promoting diversity, and the development of and leadership quality of MOD and Civil Service talent.
Corporate
- DCMCI lead into Future Campus concept (DefAc 2030) supporting development to whole force campus.
- Lead activities in support of wider DCMCI and Defence Academy as directed.

- Undertake line management, mentoring and countersigning tasks as required by the role. This role has 1 direct report.

Person specification
Leading a small team with matrixed input from a wider team of technical and training SMEs working across the wider DCMCI organisation. The post holder will need to be a motivated self-starter who has both strong demonstrable project and stakeholder management experience, alongside a strong track record in effectively managing key and complex relationships.They should have a commitment to efficiency and continuous improvement with the desire to exploit good ideas to the benefit of Defence.
Essential Criteria
- Strong Project Management experience.
- Strong stakeholder management experience.
- Experience of working within a training and education environment.
- APM/MSP or similar.
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge and Experience of working within Defence.

Alongside your salary of £59,690, Ministry of Defence contributes £17,292 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Find out what benefits a Civil Service Pension provides.
- Flexi-time scheme upon completion of 6 months service if new to the Civil Service or the Line Manager has the ability to adopt flexible working sooner than the 6 month period.
- With Line Manager agreement move to an alternative Working Patterns (there are 9).
- 25 days paid annual leave rising (1 day per year) to 30 days upon completion of 5 years’ service. If by chance you have previously completed service in the Public Sector in the past 5 years, you may be eligible to request 30 days leave immediately. (Evidence will be required).

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance. This Recruitment Process Will Consist Of Two Parts
- A written application containing your experience (a CV and a Statement of Suitability [Personal Statement]) and 2 Behaviours drawn from the Civil Service Success Profiles.
