Senior Mechanical Engineer (Maintenance)
Job summary
A leading engineering firm in Derby is looking for a skilled mechanical engineer to diagnose and manage maintenance for council buildings. This role involves problem-solving and overseeing contractors while ensuring compliance with health and safety standards. The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical maintenance experience, gas certification, and feel confident producing technical reports. Initially, this role offers 37 hours per week, with a rate of £46.40 per hour for a 6-month contract.

- Proven experience in reactive maintenance and fault diagnosis.
- Previous hands-on experience is highly desirable.
- Strong background in mechanical and heating maintenance.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose mechanical and heating system failures.
- Raise and manage work orders via the maintenance portal.
- Supervise contractors and inspect works for quality.

- Diagnose mechanical and heating system failures across council buildings
- Attend site, investigate faults and produce clear defect and condition reports
- Raise and manage work orders via the maintenance portal
- Provide mechanical and heating design input where required
- Supervise contractors and inspect works for quality and compliance
- Advise schools and stakeholders on maintenance priorities
- Ensure compliance with health & safety and energy efficiency standards
You'll be site-based in Derby around 3 days per week.
- Strong background in mechanical & heating maintenance
- Proven experience in reactive maintenance and fault diagnosis
- Previous "on the tools" experience highly desirable
- Gas certification and recognised mechanical qualification (e.g. NVQ Level 7, BTEC HNC/HND or similar)
- Confident producing technical reports and making engineering decisions
- Location: Derby City Council (DE1 2FS)
- Contract: Initial 6 months
- Hours: 37 per week
- Rate: £46.40 per hour (Inside IR35 - Umbrella)
