Job summary

A leading engineering firm in Derby is looking for a skilled mechanical engineer to diagnose and manage maintenance for council buildings. This role involves problem-solving and overseeing contractors while ensuring compliance with health and safety standards. The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical maintenance experience, gas certification, and feel confident producing technical reports. Initially, this role offers 37 hours per week, with a rate of £46.40 per hour for a 6-month contract.

Job description

Are you looking for a maintenance-focused engineering role where your expertise makes a real difference to public buildings? Do you enjoy diagnosing mechanical failures and getting to the root cause of problems?

The role
  • Diagnose mechanical and heating system failures across council buildings
  • Attend site, investigate faults and produce clear defect and condition reports
  • Raise and manage work orders via the maintenance portal
  • Provide mechanical and heating design input where required
  • Supervise contractors and inspect works for quality and compliance
  • Advise schools and stakeholders on maintenance priorities
  • Ensure compliance with health & safety and energy efficiency standards

You'll be site-based in Derby around 3 days per week.

About you
  • Strong background in mechanical & heating maintenance
  • Proven experience in reactive maintenance and fault diagnosis
  • Previous "on the tools" experience highly desirable
  • Gas certification and recognised mechanical qualification (e.g. NVQ Level 7, BTEC HNC/HND or similar)
  • Confident producing technical reports and making engineering decisions

  • Location: Derby City Council (DE1 2FS)
  • Contract: Initial 6 months
  • Hours: 37 per week
  • Rate: £46.40 per hour (Inside IR35 - Umbrella)
