Job description
Overview

Assist students and families to make the best use of available opportunities and resources and fully develop each student’s individual potential. Assist in bringing to the educational process an understanding of the psychosocial development of children and the influences of family, community, and cultural differences as they interact with the educational process. May be required to attend evening meetings.

Responsibilities

Primary Duties include but are not limited to:

  1. Professional Duties:
    1. Serve as a liaison between the school/family/community.
    2. Assist families with the interpretation of school policies and procedures.
    3. Assist parents in utilizing school and community resources to help children maximize their educational abilities.
    4. Assist parents in accessing State and Federal funding.
    5. Promote parental involvement in school conferences.
    6. Assist and support parents to understand their child’s developmental and educational needs.
    7. Conduct family needs assessments.
    8. Facilitate parent groups.
    9. Provide culturally competent services.
    10. Conduct home visits as necessary.
    11. Organize intake information and coordinate with school personnel regarding intake form, applications, and screenings as assigned.
    12. Organize and schedule school districts referred evaluations for Preschool and School Age students as appropriate.
    13. Participate in the evaluation of special education placements as assigned.
    14. Participate in case conferences with other school specialists.
    15. Collaborate with support personnel within the school to understand family, cultural and community factors affecting students.
    16. Provide parent/individual/group counseling to assist students/families to cope in times of crisis, become resilient successful learners, and gain personal and social competencies as appropriate.
    17. Participate in the development of behavioral modification plans, Functional Behavioral Assessments, and Supportive Intervention Plans.
    18. Participate in transition planning for students and guide parents through the transition process.
    19. Maintain accurate, appropriate and timely case records and documentation.
    20. Maintain and update state mandated triennial social history evaluations and/or quarterly progress reports.
    21. Keep abreast of current community resources and determine how these resources may be beneficial to the student, his/her family, and the family’s involvement in the academic process.
    22. Understand and practice in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, statutes, and/or policies that relate to students and families.
    23. Demonstrate knowledge of job responsibilities.
    24. Maintain appropriate professional standards in interactions with families.
    25. Demonstrate the ability to recognize problems that occur and report them immediately.
    26. Demonstrate flexibility and is readily adaptable to change.
    27. Demonstrate effective time management.
  2. Environment Management:
    1. Responsible for the health and safety of children during therapy sessions.
    2. Maintain a healthy, safe and attractive environment.
  3. Professional Behavior:
    1. Cooperate and conduct self in manner appropriate to school education setting.
    2. Adhere to program specific policies and procedures.
    3. Participate in program-wide activities and act in an appropriate manner.
    4. Participate in activities and seek support to enhance knowledge in areas pertinent to students in the school.
  4. Professional Development:
    1. Attend and participate in required in-services and staff development in an appropriate manner.
    2. Attend and participate in supervision and implement recommendations appropriately.
    3. Collaborate with each student’s clinical service providers to ensure a comprehensive program for each student.
  5. Adhere to general policies of the organization/regulators including:
    1. Code of Ethical Conduct.
    2. Emergency/disaster preparedness protocols.
    3. Departmental in-service education program requirements.
    4. Fire/Safety prevention protocols.
    5. Policies and procedures (attendance, punctuality, appearance, professional attitude, etc.).
    6. Quality improvement activities.
    7. Job related self-development education activities.
    8. Infection control practices and procedures.
    9. Regulatory requirements and annual physical examination and Mantoux testing.
  6. Performs other related duties, as required:
    1. Demonstrate understanding of the needs of students and visitors for each specific age group.
    2. Address safety and psychological needs of the special age groups, as appropriate, in the performance of work activities.
    3. Address the needs of special groups, hearing impaired, physically challenged and various issues relating to the program and facility.
    4. Maintain child, family and employee confidentiality.
    5. Is consistently courteous and considerate in person, on the telephone, and in interactions with children and others.
    6. Exhibit the “At Your Service” attitude, i.e. smiles, uses positive eye contact, and is friendly, open and approachable.
    7. Respond quickly to student and/or parent/guardian’s request, refers to appropriate member of the care team, if necessary, and informs supervisor of actions taken.
    8. Promote positive co-worker relationships, teamwork and cooperation.
    9. Work collaboratively and is respectful of others.
    10. Take individual responsibility for providing outstanding Service Quality.
Qualifications

Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Social Work and New York State Licensure in Social Work required. Prior experience working in a school setting preferred.
