Job description

Do you have experience in identifying, assessing, and developing controls for risks in industrial environments? Have you developed and applied frameworks supporting the management of multiple risks? If this sounds like you, consider joining our growing team in Prevention Risk Management Services.

As an Industrial Risk Specialist, you will lead and support risk-based projects, influence stakeholders throughout the province, and advise on risk-based strategies.

Prevention Risk Management Services at WorkSafeBC focuses on risks to workers in BC, including those that cannot be readily identified and analyzed using existing, internal WorkSafeBC data sources. Categories of risks include catastrophic risks, emerging risks, slow acting harms, and risks that are undetected, underreported, or misdiagnosed - including psychosocial hazards, mental health challenges, and associated systemic gaps in risk identification

How you'll make a difference: You\'ll help ensure B.C. workers go home safely at the end of their workday

Where you\'ll work

At WorkSafeBC, we offer a hybrid work model that combines working remotely, and in our offices, based on the operational needs of the position. For further information on the hybrid work arrangements, please refer to WSN - Hybrid Work.

What you\'ll do
  • Assess contributory risk factors and potential risk controls through the application of risk assessment frameworks, including bow tie analysis, HAZOP (Hazard and Operability study), FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis), processing mapping and analysis, and other risk assessment frameworks as appropriate
  • Develop, refine and implement frameworks for risk assessment and risk management tools to enhance organizational risk intelligence and inform strategic decision-making for both internal and external interest holders.
  • Identify and assess regulatory frameworks relevant to contributory factors and risk control, and review regulatory frameworks in other jurisdictions
  • Lead multi-disciplinary teams in conducting thorough risk assessments and evaluations and identify gaps in current risk control measures.
  • Where required, travel within the province to liaise with government agencies, employers, professional bodies and industry associations to inform on and influence the practical application of risk-based approaches in industrial environments
  • Consistently models the appropriate level of organizational behaviours expected of all WorkSafeBC employees: responsive, respectful, fair, collaborative, accountable, and forward thinking.
Is this a good fit for you?

We\'re looking for someone who can:

  • Prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced work environment
  • Work both independently and on a multi-disciplinary team
  • Network and build partnerships with internal and external interest holders
  • Exhibit superior verbal and written communication skills, and exceptional organizational skills
  • Understand and communicate the safety implications associated with psychosocial risks
  • Stay current with industry trends in mental health.

Your background and experience:

  • A master\'s degree in a related field and a minimum of three years of experience in industrial risk assessment and risk management. Experience with expertise in psychosocial risk and mental health in workplaces is preferred or
  • A bachelor\'s degree in a related field and a minimum of four years of experience in industrial risk assessment and risk management. Proven application of mental health risk frameworks and interventions in real-world settings is preferred
  • A recognized occupational health and safety certification is an asset (e.g., CRSP, CSP, ROH, CIH, COHN)
  • A recognized certification or designation addressing aspects of risk assessment and risk management is an asset (e.g. CRM, P. Eng)
  • Working knowledge of project management practices and applications

Preferred background:

  • Hands-on experience applying national and international standards (ex. ISO 45003, the National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace)
  • Experience conducting psychosocial hazard assessments, analyzing mental health incident data, and developing risk reduction strategies to foster psychological safety and well-being
  • Knowledge of provincial, federal, and international legislation and regulations related to worker mental health
  • A recognized certification or advanced training in workplace psychological health and safety (ex. Certified Psychological Health and Safety Advisor) is an asset.

An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered
