Overview

Ottawa County Parks and Recreation is hiring seasonal staff. Under the supervision of the Maintenance Crew Leader, works as part of a crew who completes a wide variety of park maintenance operations and project work at various sites during the spring, summer, fall, and early winter. Examples of work include: general building and grounds clean up, cutting firewood, snow removal, trail building and maintenance, painting, invasive plant removal, table and bench repairs, cutting lumber, chipping brush, trimming trees and other related tasks. This position is seasonal or part-time.

This is a seasonal, non-benefited position working up to 40 hours per week reporting to Hager Park. Must be available for day, evening, weekend, and holiday work hours. The position would start early May 2024 and work until early September 2024 (Labor Day). The ideal candidate will have the ability to interact positively and constructively with the general public and co-workers, have a willingness to learn, and proven dependability. No prior experience is necessary.

Responsibilities
  • Performs seasonal building and grounds maintenance in the spring and fall and makes repairs and improvements at other times as needed.
  • Performs a wide variety of grounds work including cutting and transporting firewood, snow removal, trail construction and maintenance, tree trimming and removal, constructs boardwalks and bridges, paints, repairs tables and benches, chips brush, and removes invasive plant species.
  • Operates equipment as needed, including mowers and tractors, chippers and other equipment.
  • Responsible for completing assigned tasks in a timely manner and to the standards established by the Parks Commission and administered by management staff.
  • Perform other functions as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Must be 18 years of age. High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Licenses and Certifications:
    • A valid Michigan Driver's License may be required for some positions.
  • Knowledge and Skills:
    • Working knowledge of the maintenance construction trades, including painting, carpentry, electrical and electronic repair, plumbing, etc.
    • Working knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and plumbing preventive and emergency maintenance practices.
    • Operating knowledge of a variety of mowers, brush hogs, edgers, chainsaws, snow removal, trail grooming and other equipment used in park maintenance.
    • Working knowledge of the proper use of manual and power tools commonly used in the maintenance construction trades.
    • Ability to layout work efficiently so as to minimize man-hours and materials required to properly complete work.
    • Knowledge of OSHA/MIOSHA occupational health and safety rules, regulations and requirements.
    • Thorough working knowledge of safety protocols and practices.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Must have sufficient visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses, to visually align components of structural features, equipment, operating systems, etc.; accurately read gauges and take measurements; and identify damage to or deterioration of facility features, fixtures, furnishings, operating systems and components thereof.
    • Must have sufficient visual color discrimination to properly match color-coded pairs of electrical wires.
    • Must have sufficient auditory ability, with or without audiological devices, to hear alarms, other warning signals and vehicle signals indicating backward or forward motion.
    • Must be able to descend to and ascend from floor and ground level several times per day to repair features and fixtures mounted at or near ground/floor level.
    • Must be able to work with arms extended above shoulder level for the entire length of shift to repair or replace features, fixtures, systems and/or components thereof mounted at or above shoulder height.
    • Must be able to ascend/descend ladders to access features, fixtures, systems and/or components located in ceilings or on rooftops.
    • Must be able to operate and ride in lift devices to access rooftops and exterior lighting systems.
    • Must have sufficient manual strength and dexterity to use small hand and power tools.
    • Must be able to lift and move equipment and materials weighing up to 80 lbs. with or without mechanical or other assistance.
    • Must have sufficient strength and mobility in wrists, elbows and shoulders to operate power tools commonly used in construction trades.
    • Must be able to tolerate exposure to extreme temperatures; dirt, dust, pollen and other airborne particulates; and inclement weather conditions.
    • Must be able to tolerate exposure to custodial and other chemicals, solvents, adhesives, caulks and other compounds and chemicals commonly used in facilities maintenance.
    • Must be able to enter and maneuver in confined spaces to access mechanical rooms and operating systems.
    • Must be able to wear all required safety clothing and equipment.
  • Working Conditions:
    • Exposure to moving mechanical hazards; electrical hazards; noxious fumes; dust, dirt, and other airborne particulates; inclement weather; bloodborne pathogens; cleaning compounds; solvents; detergents; noise; and other hazards. Hours and days worked will vary by season with the majority occurring in spring and fall. Evening, weekend, and holiday hours may be required.
