Senior Technical Underwriting Specialist, Casualty
The Central Technical Unit offers a remarkable opportunity for a Casualty Specialist. You will be part of a diverse team responsible for enhancing portfolio performance to support the strategic growth of Global Corporate and Specialty (GCS) and Aviva Business Insurance (ABI).
Your role will be multi-faceted. You will collaborate closely with underwriting branches and key stakeholders to implement improvement projects that positively impact the Casualty portfolio and segment performance, aligned with the Commercial Underwriting Strategy.
You will have the opportunity to challenge existing methods, processes, controls, and mentorship practices with the goal of simplifying, clarifying, and empowering front-line underwriting teams to achieve positive outcomes for customers and brokers within Commercial Insurance.
What You'll Do
- Serve as a subject matter expert, providing underwriting support nationwide through coaching and mentoring, including clarification of coverage, endorsements, and wording, and responding effectively to referrals.
- Collaborate with Data Analytics, Claims, and the Technical Community across Commercial Lines to analyze financial data, gain insights, and communicate our underwriting appetite clearly.
- Participate in Liability Large Loss and Attritional Claim Reviews to identify current and future loss trends impacting Reinsurance, Pricing, Underwriting Appetite, and Financial Performance.
- Contribute to the timely communication and implementation of pricing, coverage, and product changes.
- Develop and establish portfolio controls with Risk to set risk parameters and mitigate emerging risks.
- Review policy wordings to ensure liability coverages meet industry standards while differentiating Aviva from competitors.
- Drive the development of underwriting guidelines aligned with market trends, business strategies, and compliance requirements.
- Identify training needs to promote underwriting excellence and facilitate knowledge sharing across the organization.
- Provide insights for market research and support the development of innovative tools and product enhancements.
- Stay informed about industry trends, regulatory changes, and developments.
What You'll Bring
- 7+ years of Commercial Lines underwriting experience, preferably with a focus on Casualty.
- Knowledge of French is an asset for communication with customers, partners, and teams across Canada.
- Resourcefulness in analyzing data, identifying issues, and defining solutions.
- Proven leadership and influencing skills for optimal outcomes.
- Solution-oriented mindset, maintaining standards while exploring new business opportunities.
- Understanding of Claims, Risk Management, Pricing, and Reserving functions.
- Post-secondary education or equivalent experience in Business or related fields.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- CIP designation; FCIP is an asset.
- Effective communication skills across all organizational levels.
- Experience in Professional Lines, Renewable Energy, and/or Environmental Insurance is advantageous.
