Job description
The Team

The Radio and Telecommunications team is a small, dedicated group of five Radio Technologists who maintain the Ministry’s critical radio communications infrastructure across B.C. This established team works collaboratively in pairs to service 188 mountain-top repeater sites, ensuring reliable communication networks that support highway maintenance and public safety. We value diversity, inclusion, and teamwork, and you’ll have opportunities to work with a range of partners, including highway maintenance contractors, Ministry staff, and BC Ambulance, while contributing to work that truly makes a difference.

The Role

As a Radio and Communications Technologist, you’ll be responsible for installing, testing, repairing, and maintaining radio and telecommunications systems that keep the Ministry’s operations connected and safe. Your work ensures reliable communication for highway safety and emergency response, directly impacting the well-being of workers and the public. This is a unique opportunity to join a collaborative team, tackle technical challenges in diverse environments—from urban centers to remote mountain sites—and help maintain critical infrastructure that supports safety across the province.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Graduation with a diploma from a recognized 2-year Electronics Technologist program or equivalent, and 5 years of related experience in VHF/UHF trunked radio systems.
  • Experience in radio frequency system design.
  • Experience in reading and interpreting schematics, other technical information and topographical maps.
  • Experience in surface mount, multi-layer soldering methods and soldering with microscopes.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.

Preference may be given to applicants with:

  • Experience with the Ministry of Transportation and Transit.

Provisos:

  • Must be physically fit to lift equipment and batteries up to 45Kg and perform field work.
  • Must hold a valid B.C. driver’s license.

Must be willing and able to:

  • Travel year-round to satisfy site construction and maintenance.
  • Travel and work for extended periods on short notice in urgent situations.
  • Work on mountaintops in winter in locations prone to adverse weather and without shelter.
  • Train and attain certification in Tower Climbing, Crane Safe, Survival, TDG, WHIMIS and other requirements to stay relevant in the position.
