About the Role

At Kirklees Council, we’re passionate about delivering innovative and creative services to our communities. Our inclusive programmes are aimed at young people of all abilities, and we encourage young people to challenge themselves in what they are able to achieve. We’re looking for a Recreational Leader to join our Outdoor Learning Team at Little Deer Wood in Mirfield, our centre of excellence for Outdoor Learning. The team is part of the Families Together Service and this is a fantastic opportunity to inspire children, young people, and adults through outdoor learning, residential experiences, and team-building activities. You’ll also play a key role in delivering the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme.

What You’ll Do

As a Recreational Leader, you will:

• Plan and deliver engaging outdoor learning activities for children, young people, and community groups.
• Support participants to build confidence, leadership, and personal development.
• Work with partner agencies to promote inclusive and accessible programmes across Kirklees.
• Lead residential and overnight activities when required.
• Celebrate achievements and successes of young people.
• Carry out data input, cash handling, and general administration.
• Take responsibility for specific project work within the service.

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking someone who is:

• Experienced in working with children and young people, including those with SEND.
• Qualified in a relevant field (e.g. Level 3 Youth Work, Outdoor Activity Instructor, or NGB equivalent to deliver walking/climbing/archery/canoeing activities).
• Knowledgeable about youth work practices and committed to inclusion and diversity.
• A positive communicator who builds strong relationships with young people, colleagues, and visiting staff.
• Flexible and willing to work evenings, weekends, school holidays, and residentials.
• A team player who can also work independently.
• A positive role model with an understanding of safeguarding responsibilities.
• First aid trained (or willing to undertake training).

A full driving licence and access to a car is desirable. You must also be able to meet the physical demands of the role and undertake an enhanced DBS check.
