Job description
Overview

Agbiz would like to invite dynamic and suitably qualified individuals to apply for the position of Legal Intelligence Specialist. This is a supporting role that reports to the Head: Legal Intelligence. The incumbent needs a legal qualification as background but the position differs vastly from legal practice.

Duties
  • Analysis and research on government policies and legislation
  • Rigorous analysis of the policies and legislation impacting agribusiness and the agricultural environment
  • Evidence-based research to determine the impact of proposed changes in policy and legislation
  • Draft alternative proposals that will create an enabling environment for agribusinesses
  • Support the Head: Legal Intelligence to effectively engage with government and other stakeholders on policy and legislation
  • Accompany the Head: Legal Intelligence to meetings, provide inputs and may need to represent Agbiz and make inputs at these platforms as delegated by the Head: Legal Intelligence conduct policy advocacy on behalf of Agbiz members by presenting to Parliament, serving on task teams at Nedlac and BUSA, as well as direct engagements with regulators
  • Provide legal & policy support within Agbiz
  • Legal & policy analysis support to senior policy staff and desk managers in collaboration with their supervisor
  • Effective communication on policy and legislation to members
  • Updates and reports to members on new policies and draft legislation through written articles in weekly newsletter and other mediums
  • Provide internal advice on legal compliance including advising Agbiz management on its legal and regulatory compliance and contract management with third parties
  • Create and maintain brand awareness building Agbiz brand through representing as a professional credible entity
Qualifications
  • An LLB or Bcom Law degree from a recognised university is required. An LLM or similar post graduate degree in a related field will be advantageous.
  • Position does not require the incumbent to be an admitted attorney or advocate but such experience will be advantageous.
DesiredExperience
  • Researching public policy, drafting policy briefs or participating/assisting in negotiations on public policy.
  • Working in a membership organisation such as a business chamber, employment organisation.
  • Analysing policy proposals or drafting opinion pieces; or Legal drafting.

Reports to: Head: Legal Intelligence

Agbiz is committed to the principle of transformation through the appointment of persons from designated groups. The position has been graded according to the Patterson grading system as C3. Remuneration will only be discussed with prospective candidates but it comprises of a cost-to-company package.
