A leading renewable energy firm is looking for an experienced Health & Safety Manager to oversee HSES standards on a large solar PV project in Johannesburg, South Africa. Job description
Introduction

We are seeking an experienced Health & Safety Manager to lead and implement Health, Safety, Environmental, and Social (HSES) standards on a large-scale solar PV project. This role involves managing all on-site HSES functions, ensuring compliance with legislation and international standards, and fostering a safe working environment.

The ideal candidate will be SACPCMP-registered (or hold an equivalent H&S qualification) with extensive experience managing HSES on utility-scale solar construction projects. You should be a proactive leader with deep knowledge of local regulations, international standards (IFC, ISO 45001, ISO 14001), and risk management practices.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage all on-site HSES functions for the solar PV project.

  • Ensure compliance with local legislation, client requirements, and international standards.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain site-specific HSES plans, procedures, and risk assessments.

  • Monitor, enforce, and continuously improve safety protocols.

  • Identify risks and implement mitigation measures proactively.

  • Conduct training, toolbox talks, coaching, and ongoing support for site teams.

  • Perform regular safety audits, site inspections, and incident investigations.

  • Collaborate with contractors, engineers, project managers, and stakeholders to maintain a safe work environment.

  • Prepare and present HSES performance reports, incident analyses, and corrective actions to management and regulatory bodies.

Desired Experience & Qualification

Minimum Requirements:

  • SACPCMP registration (CHSO/CHSM/CHSA) or equivalent H&S qualification.

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience supervising HSES on large solar construction sites.

  • Proven knowledge of local HSES regulations and international best-practice standards.

  • Hands-on experience implementing IFC, World Bank EHS Guidelines, and ISO standards.

  • Supervised at least 5 solar PV projects, including 3 projects of 10 MWp or larger.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.

  • Preferred Skills:

  • Ability to work independently and under pressure.

  • Strong analytical and report-writing capabilities.

  • Experience in multicultural and multidisciplinary project environments.

  • Proven knowledge of local HSES regulations and international best-practice standards.

  • Hands-on experience implementing IFC, World Bank EHS Guidelines, and ISO standards.

  • Supervised at least 5 solar PV projects, including 3 projects of 10 MWp or larger.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.

Package & Working Conditions

Working Conditions:

  • Full-time, on-site at the project location in North West Province.

  • Project-based contract for 17 months, with possibility of renewal depending on project requirements.
