Job Overview

The Pipeline Engineer applies their conceptual knowledge of Pipeline (Eng) and, with a moderate level of guidance and direction from colleagues and leadership, is responsible for solving a range of straightforward Pipeline (Eng) problems. They will be responsible for analyzing viable solutions using standard procedures and building knowledge of the company, processes, and customers. The Pipeline Engineer understands critical business drivers and applies this knowledge to solve problems in straightforward situations by analyzing viable solutions using technical experience, judgment, and precedents.

Qualifications
  • 3-8 years of experience in oil and gas with a major contractor or consultant predominantly performing detail design
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Master’s Degree is Preferred)
  • Familiar with the content and application of standards, codes, and guidelines as applicable
  • Knowledge of many basic design techniques and analysis methods
  • Preferably Registered Engineer in Training (ElT) or member of a professional engineering society as applicable
  • Eager to learn
  • Working knowledge of English, both oral and written
  • HSE, TQM, and cost-conscious
  • Show flexibility and ensure proper hand‑over with regards to:
    • The reassignment to other departments, construction sites, and fabrication yards
    • The replacement of colleagues during illness and holidays
    • The provision of assistance to other colleagues with heavy workloads (also other projects) when possible/desirable
    • The managing/learning of future current working methods and software applications
  • Is familiar with the use of codes and standards
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Apply existing knowledge and experience in the pipeline discipline to support routine assignments
  • Use best practices and knowledge of internal or external issues to improve products or services in the pipeline discipline
  • Apply conceptual knowledge of pipeline and with a moderate level of guidance and direction from colleagues and leadership, solving a range of straightforward pipeline problems
  • Analyze possible solutions using standard procedures, as well as building knowledge of the company, processes, and customers
  • Understand key business drivers and apply this knowledge to solve problems in straightforward situations through analysis of possible solutions using technical experience, judgment, and precedents
  • Gain familiarity with the project scope of work, specifications, schedule, and all inter‑discipline requirements, including identifying concerns as early as practicable
  • Recognize changes to scope and notify the Discipline Lead Engineer
  • Interface with all disciplines to develop clash‑free designs
  • Interface with other departments to obtain input for Discipline designs and drawings
  • Document substantive communications (communications that result in significant decisions or assignment of actions) and forward copies to Discipline Lead Engineer and Discipline Manager
  • Provide required bid inputs as directed
  • Prepare sketches of detailed design to guide Designers
  • Assist procurement personnel in procuring discipline equipment, materials, and services Procurement assistance includes preparing requisitions, evaluating technical quotations, preparing queries, compiling
  • Bid tabulations and recommendations, preparing purchase requisitions, and coordinating with Procurement to expedite vendor documents, as directed by the Discipline Lead Engineer
  • Review MTOs for requisitions
  • Assist in updating weight report based on receipt of vendor information
  • Check drawings
  • Check engineering performed by others within the Discipline
  • Review vendor and subcontractor submittals, checking for compliance with project specifications and providing comments as necessary
  • Perform design verification through single discipline checks and assist with inter‑discipline checks (IDC)
  • Keep the Lead Engineer apprised of all activities, progress, and concerns
  • Check final subcontractor and vendor data manuals to ensure that all requested data has been received and approved
  • Capture lessons learned and entered them into the database system
  • Capture Knowledge Objects and enter them into the database system
  • Develop an awareness of costs related to own work and of the discipline
    • Prepare the following for pipelines and their components
    • Material specifications and datasheets
    • Fabrication specifications
    • Installation specifications
    • Pipeline reports and installation manuals
  • Perform the following designs, analyses, and evaluations for pipelines and their components:
    • Wall thickness designs
    • On‑bottom stability analyses
    • Pipeline cathodic protection designs
    • Free‑span analyses
    • Pipeline expansion and rigid riser stress analyses using finite element analysis (FEA) tools
    • Route selection designs
    • Bottom roughness evaluations
    • Crossing support designs
    • Dropped object protection structure designs
    • Clamp designs
    • Subsea structure designs
    • Shore approach designs
    • Onshore pipeline designs
    • Pipeline local and global buckling mitigation designs
    • Pipeline seismic analyses
    • Installation analyses

Functional: Department Manager
Liaise With: All design/drafting disciplines, all Engineering disciplines, Construction Site/fabrication group, and Document Control
Supervises: Associate /Trainee Pipeline Engineers
