A global financial services provider is seeking a Director in the Export Finance team based in Mexico City. This role involves the origination and execution of Agency supported financing in Mexico and Latin America. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of ECA and MDB markets, proven experience in financing, and excellent communication skills in both Spanish and English. The position requires strategic development and client engagement, with leadership responsibilities over junior resources in the team.

Overview of HSBC Infrastructure Finance

The global HSBC Infrastructure Finance ("HIF") team comprises of Infrastructure Finance and Export Finance, together providing a full suite of financing solutions to corporates, financial sponsors, financial institutions and governments in a variety of sectors, including Infrastructure, Transport, Logistics, Renewables and Power & Utilities.

The team provides a central point for clients to access product agnostic advice on financing, capital structure and structured debt capital markets, as well as origination and execution of infrastructure, project and export finance lending mandates. HIF plays a critical role in financing the energy transition for our clients and we have pivoted our business model, aiming to increase our provision of financing to key energy transition sub-sectors, to monetise the transition and deliver incremental revenue for the bank. HIF consists of over 160 employees located in 14 countries with key hubs in London, Dubai, Hong Kong, Singapore and New York.

Within HIF the Export Finance team supports the cross-border trade of capital goods and services by HSBC’s clients using government supported and multilateral programs. These programs are administered by Export Credit Agencies ("ECAs") and Multilateral Development Banks ("MDBs"), to credit enhance the financing provided to our borrowers. Export Finance is a global team with presence in London, Dubai, Hong Kong, Singapore, along with several other locations in Europe and Asia including Japan, Mainland China, and South Korea. The business is one of the world’s leading arrangers of ECA and MDB supported debt with a long-established track-record.

The Export Finance team works across product, regions, countries and sectors to arrange medium and long-term financing for clients in the public and private sectors purchasing capital goods and services or investing in a particular region. Export Finance can cover inter alia infrastructure development, manufacturing equipment, marine assets, aircraft, power generation equipment, real estate and a host of other goods and services. Export Finance also features regularly in the financing of limited-recourse projects, as an additional source of funding alongside commercial bank loans. HIF Export Finance London is the largest hub for the group and covers a number of geographies, including the Americas, Sub Saharan Africa and Eastern Europe, as well as many of the European ECAs.

Job Purpose
  • As a Director in the Export Finance team based in Mexico City you will have responsibility for the origination and execution of Agency supported financing in Mexico and the wider Latin American region.
  • You will report to the Regional Head of the Export Finance Americas business in London on a functional basis as well as to local management within HSBC Mexico at an entity level.
  • You will be expected to travel within the region periodically and will work closely with the Global team across all sub-sectors and Borrower profiles, including, Sovereign, Corporate and limited recourse project finance.
  • You will work closely with the global Export Finance team, relationship managers, product partners, ECAs, MDBs and Borrowers to originate, structure and arrange Agency supported financing for our clients.
  • It is expected that we will also recruit a junior resource to support the Mexico City based Director in delivering all aspects of the role, including execution and portfolio management, though some of this will also continue to be performed by the London based team.
Principle Responsibilities

Key responsibilities would include to:

  • Develop in consultation with HIF management a strategy to grow the Export Finance business in some key markets within Latin America and implement the same, including delivery of all financial, capital, risk, resourcing, and operational objectives.
  • Drive client engagement in Mexico and across the wider region, with responsibility for origination to execution and subsequent portfolio management.
  • Exhibit leadership attributes with the local junior, as well as accessing the junior resource of the wider team to deliver the best outcomes for our clients.
  • Act with a level of autonomy in both origination and execution to seek out and pitch for new opportunities with HSBC’s current and prospect clients.
  • Ensure the Export Finance business you are responsible for is conducted within the risk and compliance framework for the business, ensuring alignment with HSBC’s policies, procedures, and values.
Skills, Experience and Qualification
  • Detailed understanding and demonstrable industry experience of the ECA, MDB, and DFI finance market, especially as it relates to Mexico and the broader region.
  • Established track record of originating, structuring, and executing Agency supported financings in the region.
  • Strong business communication and analytical skills, including credit and reputational risk.
  • Vision, capability and energy to devise and implement strategic initiatives.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to partner with key stakeholders and senior management.
  • Superior organisational skills, and experience in working with a diverse team environment.
  • Ability to guide environmental, social and governance considerations related to transactions.
  • Close familiarity with alternative financing structures and market themes.
  • Proficiency in Spanish and English – spoken and written (business level) essential. Fluency in Portuguese is also viewed favourably.
  • Undergraduate or Postgraduate education preferred.
