JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Teacher - Primary

REPORTS TO: Principal

Overview

The post holder is responsible for carrying out professional duties as a teacher within the school in accordance with the terms and conditions of employment and the Board’s policies.

Responsibilities
  1. Planning
    • Planning and preparing courses and lessons
    • Teaching according to the educational needs of the pupils assigned, including setting and marking work
    • Assessing, recording and reporting on development, progress and attainment of pupils
  2. General
    • Promoting the general progress and well-being of pupils and groups assigned
    • Providing advice and guidance on educational and social matters, future education and careers
    • Making records and reports on pupils’ personal and social needs
    • Communicating and consulting with parents
    • Co-operating with persons or bodies outside the school as approved by the employing authority and Board of Governors
    • Participating in meetings for these purposes
  3. Assessment/Reporting
    • Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references for pupils
  4. Staff Development/Professional Development
    • Participating in staff development and performance review when required
    • Reviewing teaching methods and programmes of work
    • Participating in arrangements for further training and professional development
    • Advising and cooperating with the Principal and other teachers on curriculum development, teaching materials, programmes, assessment and pastoral arrangements
  5. Discipline/Health and Safety
    • Maintaining good order and discipline and safeguarding health and safety
    • Participating in meetings related to curriculum, administration or pastoral arrangements
  6. Public Examinations
    • Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations and assessing pupils
    • Recording and reporting assessments and supervising during examinations
  7. Management/Administration
    • Contributing to selection and professional development of other teachers
    • Co-ordinating or managing the work of other teachers
    • Participating in curriculum, organisation and pastoral development and management
    • Participating in administrative tasks including supervision of support staff and allocation of equipment
    • Attending assemblies and registering attendance as required
  8. Number of days/Hours of work
    • 195 days per year, with up to 190 teaching days
    • 1,265 hours per year, excluding time spent preparing and marking outside school premises
    • Weekly teaching hours framework with allowances for planning and other duties
    • Breaks: at least 30 minutes between 12 noon and 2:00 pm (or 2:30 pm in nursery settings)
  9. Staff cover
    • Supervising and teaching pupils when a teacher is unavailable, within defined conditions
  10. Review and Development
    • This job description is a guideline and may be revised; other duties of a similar nature may be assigned

    • Experience teaching children with Special Educational Needs
    • Knowledge of digital classroom tools and use of tablets/mobile technologies to enhance teaching and learning
  • Other
    • Registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI)

Section 3 — Desirable Criteria

Desirable criteria may be used to determine a manageable pool of candidates and will be applied as described.

  • Qualifications and Experience
    • Experience monitoring pupil progress, setting targets and interventions
    • Experience teaching with phonic-based approaches
    • Experience leading Literacy initiatives
    • Experience using social media to promote community engagement
