Job summary

A leading educational recruitment agency is seeking a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to support the teaching and learning of pupils across the school in Lewisham. The HLTA will lead classes, provide individualized support, and assist with classroom management. The ideal candidate should have a Level 4 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning and experience working in educational support roles. This role offers a long-term contract with 3 days per week commitment.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Teaching Assistant or in a similar educational support role.
  • Understanding of the national curriculum and strategies for effective teaching and learning.
  • Experience working with children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with teachers to plan, prepare, and deliver learning activities.
  • Lead whole-class learning under the direction of a qualified teacher.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to meet the needs of pupils with varying abilities.
  • Assess and report on pupil progress according to school policies.
  • Promote and safeguard the welfare of all pupils.

Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)

Location: Lewisham

Contract Type: 3 days per week, Long-term

Start Date: January 2026

Job Purpose

The Higher-Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) supports the teaching and learning of pupils across the school, working under the guidance of teachers to plan, deliver, and assess learning activities. The HLTA may take responsibility for leading lessons, covering classes, and supporting individuals or small groups to raise attainment and ensure positive pupil progress.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work collaboratively with teachers to plan, prepare, and deliver learning activities in line with the school curriculum.
  • Lead whole-class learning under the direction and supervision of a qualified teacher, providing effective classroom management and engagement.
  • Adapt teaching strategies and materials to meet the needs of pupils with varying abilities and additional needs.
  • Assess, record, and report on pupil progress in line with school policies.
  • Provide feedback to pupils to support their learning and personal development.
  • Supervise pupils in a range of settings, including classrooms, playgrounds, and during educational visits.
  • Assist in the preparation and organisation of classroom resources and learning environments.
  • Support teachers with administrative and organisational tasks related to classroom management.
  • Promote and safeguard the welfare of all pupils, maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
Qualifications and Experience
  • HLTA qualification or equivalent Level 4 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning.
