Job description
Overview

The post holder will provide high quality pharmaceutical services to key areas on rotation as well as contributing to core ward commitments, including weekend and on call services. There will also be opportunities to gain leadership skills by co-ordination of specific teams of the clinical pharmacy service, alongside participation in Trust projects and departmental governance objectives within set rotations.

Pharmacy is a progressive department, keen to embrace innovative ideas to better improve our clinical service model.

Following significant investment for MMUH, our pharmacy department has led the innovations in Omnicell/automated dispensing cabinets (ADCs), AMis Smart carts and Bristol Maid keyless access lockers for patient medications which are in place across most acute areas of work - improving drug security and safe administration of drugs across the rest of the organisation.

Robotic dispensing is well established, now including an out of hours on call shute and we have successfully implemented Electronic Prescribing and Administration throughout the Trust for a number of years now.

We are working towards innovative models of delivering clinical pharmacy services as part of our 7 day working plans.

You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills; you must be able to manage your own workload, direct & supervise others and work as part of a team. The post holder will be supported by the internal Education and Training team as well as accredited medicines management trained technicians to deliver these goals.

Multi‑site Working

The four partner Trusts of the Black Country Provider Collaborative (Dudley Group NHS FT, Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust, and Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust) are actively working in partnership to deliver a collective vision focused on providing "better, faster and safer care to the population of the Black Country and beyond".

To support this vision, we are (where appropriate and safe to do so) actively looking at new models of care which:

  • Better protect elective / planned care service delivery across the system by organising on a 'hot and cold' arrangement
  • Consider the optimal use of resources through consolidation and specialisation, and
  • Seek to reduce unwarranted variance, level up / standardise care through a 'Networked Service Solution' approach across the four sites

Against this context, although this post is hosted by Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust, there may be an expectation to work flexibly across the four partner Trusts to better meet patient and service needs.

Work-Life Balance and Sustainability

As a major employer in the Black Country and West Birmingham region we are committed to supporting all employees to achieve a healthy work life balance. We want the Black Country and West Birmingham region to be the best place to work and as such will consider all requests to work flexibly taking into account personal and individual circumstances alongside the needs of the service. We encourage all prospective applicants to discuss their individual circumstances with the Recruiting Manager as part of the on‑boarding process.

Healthcare services have a significant impact on the environment. We are committed to embedding sustainable practices. We expect all colleagues to support the delivery of our Green Strategic Plan and to drive positive changes in their department by joining our Green Impact programme.

Are you a Newly Qualified Pharmacist?

We are looking for someone with drive, enthusiasm and commitment. You will have excellent people skills and the ability to work with and influence staff at many levels. You will have a keenness to use clinical and professional knowledge, skills and experience to improve patient care through the delivery of efficient medicines management services at the new acute hospital, the Midland Metropolitan University Hospital (MMUH).

The role will allow you to gain the skills and experience to meet the requirements of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Foundation Framework and will provide you with a e-portfolio of evidence for further career progression alongside our departmental Education and Training team.

About Sandwell & West Birmingham NHS Trust

SWB is an integrated care organisation with a budget of approximately £600 million and over 7,000 staff. Diversity and social care is at the core of what we do as the Trust provides Community and Acute Services to over half a million people in an urban centre that demands massive regeneration and has substantial premature mortality.

Our new acute hospital, MMUH has now opened and will continue to provide care to our local population from first class, purpose-built premises. As a result, the department now works across multiple sites where MMUH is the base of this role. If cross site if needed to complete a set rotation and this is applicable to your role, you will be informed during the recruitment process and continuing your application with this understanding.

The development of services within the new hospital now plays an important role in the regeneration of the wider area and in improving the lives of local people and reducing health inequalities.

Strategic Objectives of SWB
  1. Our People – to cultivate and sustain happy, productive and engaged staff
  2. Our Patients – to be good or outstanding in everything we do
  3. Our Population – to work seamlessly with our partners to improve life
