Areyou an enthusiastic, recently or soon to be qualified, motivated Dietitian with a keen interest in paediatrics? Do you want to start your career supporting children, young people and their families and carers? We are looking for a Dietitian to join our Children's Dietetic team to take up this exciting post.

In this full‑time post (1.0 WTE/37.5h per week), you will join the childrens diabetes and general paediatric dietetic services, working closely with other dietitians and health professionals. You will work with both in and outpatients, have opportunities for ward staff education, continuous learning and career development. You will work across two sites Leeds General Infirmary (gen med and diabetes inpatients) and St James University Hospital (diabetes outpatients).

You may also have the opportunity to support other specialities as the needs of the service arise (for example neurology). You will have support and training for this.

Main duties of the job

You will provide nutrition and dietetic care to infants, children and young people, primarily as outpatient work, but also some inpatient work. General paediatrics includes simple allergies, faltering growth, nutrient deficiencies, simple nutritional support. Diabetes care will be to patients with both T1 and T2 diabetes. There will be support and supervision from other dietitians as this is a role for someone recently qualified in dietetics or someone new to children's services. The post holder will also have opportunities for teaching and education of healthcare staff, parents and other carers.

Excellent communication skills and an understanding and strong commitment to multi‑disciplinary team working are essential.

The Leeds Children's hospital is one of the largest children's hospitals in the UK. We offer a wide range of secondary, tertiary and supra‑regional services. We provide services for the children of Leeds and across the Yorkshire and Humber Region and in some cases further afield. The Children and Young Peoples Diabetes Team is a large multiprofessional team with a national reputation for excellence. You will be an integral part of this team and have opportunity to be part of innovative and groundbreaking diabetes care.

Our Children's Dietetic Team is a large, friendly and supportive department of 36 staff, including Children’s Dietitians, Dietetic Assistants and Dietetic Associate Practitioners, Special Feed Unit Technicians and Admin staff. We are part of the wider Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Nutrition and Dietetic Service and have close links with adult services.

Job responsibilities

Provide part of a professional Nutrition and Dietetic care service, which includes advice to in‑patients, out‑patients, all healthcare staff and participation in the training of student Dietitians.

Work within the Dietetic Service providing effective interventions to specific clinical areas.

Provide a patient focussed service using Dietetic core skills.

The post holder will be professional accountable to the HCPC and accountable contractually to their employer and to the law for their actions.

The post holder will:

  • Manage own case load to a level agreed with supervisor/line manager.
  • Be involved in the provision of education and training to healthcare staff, patients, care providers and students.
  • liaise with the multidisciplinary care team to provide integrated dietetic care.
  • Be an active member of the out of hours service.
Knowledge, skills and experience required
  • BSc (Hons) Nutrition & Dietetics or equivalent.
  • HCPC Registration as a Dietitian.
  • Willing to undergo any training as required to enable performance in the job.
  • Awareness of current issues in Dietetics.
  • Good written, oral and interpersonal communication skills. No previous dietetic experience required.
  • Able to work within a team, demonstrate initiative, time management and organisational skills.
Qualifications
  • BSc (Hons) or MSc Nutrition & Dietetics or Equivalent.
  • HCPC registration.
  • Dietetic experience with some knowledge of the work of a paediatric dietitian.
  • BDA membership.
