Job description

We are pleased to advertise an exciting opportunity to join NHS Resolutions Early Notification (EN) team, working within the Safety and Learning Directorate, as a National Obstetric Clinical Fellow on a fixed-term or secondment basis for one year. The post is available from February 2026 onwards, this is open to negotiation as we acknowledge the time frames for approval required by employers and/or deaneries.

Please note that this job is Pay Band: AfC 8b or Equivalent salary according to Hospital Medical and Dental Staff (according to stage of training/ experience).

Main duties of the job

Since its launch in April 2017, the EN Scheme has played a vital role in maternity care. All maternity services are required to notify NHS Resolution of incidents where there is potential for long‑term severe brain injury. The schemes aims are to:

  • Investigate potential eligibility for compensation, taking proactive steps to reduce legal costs and improve the experience for families and staff.
  • Share learning quickly with individual trusts and across the wider system to support safety improvements and prevent recurrence.
  • Build on our Saying Sorry and Being Fair work, ensuring that openness, candour and learning are never barriers to obtaining compensation.
  • Preserve evidence so we can respond effectively should families bring cases at a later date.
  • Improve the process of obtaining compensation for families, meeting needs in real time wherever possible and reducing the risk of claims escalating unnecessarily.
About us

NHS Resolution is a not‑for‑profit arms length of the NHS working for health care providers to resolve claims fairly and to share learning across the NHS and beyond. We provide a supportive environment for our staff with specialist training and the opportunity for personal development.

NHS Resolution operates several indemnity schemes, on behalf of the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, primarily for the handling of liability claims against English NHS Trusts and other commissioners and/or providers of NHS care.

Job responsibilities

This is a unique opportunity to contribute your clinical expertise at a national level, working closely with multidisciplinary teams and leaders in maternity care. The role includes reviewing case files to provide clinical opinion, giving feedback to support system‑wide learning from claims, and the chance to lead on an individual project for publication. You will also represent NHS Resolution at external meetings with partner organisations, and attend local, regional, and national events.

Whats in it for you?

  • Develop a better understanding of the principles of good governance and risk management in healthcare
  • Gain experience in incident investigation and an ability to link safety recommendations to quality improvement work
  • Actively engage in a culture promoting patient safety at a national level
  • Connect with senior leaders and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Lead projects with potential for publication and national impact.

This is a rare opportunity to influence maternity safety nationwide while accelerating your own career development.

What you'll bring

  • Specialist knowledge of working within obstetrics in the NHS with a current minimum training level of ST5 or above
  • An understanding of the current issues and challenges within healthcare and specifically maternity services
  • An understanding of current improvement initiatives and national strategies to improve the safety of maternity and neonatal services
  • Experience of project coordination, management or leadership
  • Experience of presenting complex information to a wide range of audiences

What we offer in return

  • Competitive salary and benefits package.
  • Opportunities for career growth and development.
  • Collaborative and innovative work environment.
  • Work in a progressive environment towards data‑driven strategies.
  • A commitment to diversity, equality, and inclusion.
  • Access to the NHS Pension Scheme and a minimum of 27 days Annual Leave.
  • Commitment to support individuals in having a work and life balance, offering flexible working arrangements.

When joining the NHS family, there are a wealth of savings, discounts and support you will be able to access.

  • 24 hours employee assistance programme from Health Assured (EAP)
  • Eye care vouchers for Specsavers.
  • Blue Light card, a discount service for the emergency services and the NHS.
  • Cycle to work scheme.
  • Season ticket loan scheme.

To apply please provide us with a supporting statement explaining exactly what you will bring to this role and how you meet the essential criteria in terms of your background, experience and career achievements to date. As well as your CV listing detailed work history and job responsibilities.

We recognise some candidates may wish to use AI to support their application. We do not prohibit such use but please clearly indicate in your application where you have used AI.

We reserve the right to close the advertisement early, should we receive sufficient applications.

You must have the right to live and work in the UK. If you require a Visa, NHS Resolution is currently unable to support sponsorship requests.
