Job Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for Band 5 Midwives to join the dynamic Maternity team at UHB – Heartlands and Good Hope Hospitals. As part of our ongoing recruitment strategy, we offer midwifery roles within an integrated model of care spanning both community and inpatient clinical areas, ensuring a well‑rounded experience and enabling our midwives to deliver safe, high‑quality, personalised care across the full maternity pathway.

At UHB we have a well‑established Clinical Support Team, a robust Preceptorship Programme, ongoing training, development and mentorship opportunities. Whether you are a 3rd‑year Student Midwife, a Newly Qualified Midwife, Return to Practice or an Experienced Midwife looking for a new challenge, we would love to hear from you.

Responsibilities
  • Participate and engage in all elements of the preceptorship pathway in accordance with UHB’s standard operating procedures for preceptorship midwives.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate midwifery care using a holistic, evidence‑based approach that is women‑centred and culturally sensitive.
  • Support, supervise and teach students and staff on relevant clinical and non‑clinical procedures and practices; act as practice supervisor as required.
  • Perform and maintain required clinical procedures competently, and use clinical equipment appropriately, undertaking relevant training as required.
  • Communicate and work effectively with the wider team.
  • Participate in clinical governance by reporting serious incidents and contributing proactively to service development.
  • Participate in parent education programmes both in hospital and community settings.
  • Prioritise workload effectively.
  • Support women who choose to labour at home and the Birth Centre through the on‑call rota system.
  • Provide professional total care and support for women requesting a homebirth.
  • Utilise highly developed physical skills where appropriate, including suturing in clients' homes and hospital settings, and carry out all relevant forms of care, including emergency interventions within community and hospital environments.
Community Focussed Skills

With support, participate in an on‑call rota to support women who choose to labour at home and the Birth Centre. Act professionally in providing total care and support for women who request a homebirth. Utilize highly developed physical skills where appropriate – for example, suturing within the client’s home and hospital setting. Carry out all relevant forms of care, including emergency interventions, within the community and hospital environment.

Essential Qualifications
  • Registered Midwife on the NMC register.
  • Diploma or BSc in Midwifery Studies.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Examination of the Newborn (NIPE).
  • Mentor/assessor training or willingness to work towards it.
Essential Experience
  • Worked in a variety of settings using all midwifery skills (pre‑ or post‑registration).
  • Understands safeguarding services and supports applying this care.
  • Can demonstrate knowledge of current and emerging healthcare issues.
  • Recognises how to care for at‑risk / socially excluded service users.
