About the Trust

The MRI services at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust serve and support communities across the Kent region. We are a team of 6 RDAs, 40 Senior MRI Radiographers, 8 Reporting MRI Radiographers and 3 Superintendent MRI Radiographers across the East Kent Hospitals. Our hardworking and progressive MRI team work across three base sites as well as supporting our satellites, including the newly formed Community Diagnostic Centre at Buckland, supporting the NHS England vision of reforming diagnostic services. As a large acute Trust, we provide key services within the patient pathway, working hard as a team to continually deliver efficient and effective patient‑centric services. We are a professionally diverse team with different experiences and challenges and recognise that both professional and pastoral care for our teams is a priority.

Job Summary

The MRI department at East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundations Trust provides a wide range of high‑quality imaging for the local community and the wider population in East Kent. Our static MRI services are based at The William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, Canterbury Hospital in Canterbury and The Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital at Margate. The service is extended to Community Diagnostic Centres and mobile scanners across the east Kent region. The MRI service is continuing to develop and expand to support our community.

We are inviting applications from dynamic, experienced Senior MRI Radiographers to offer the position of Senior Radiographer to work in a diverse MRI Radiographers team at East Kent Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust.

Responsibilities

The post holder will work in a team primarily within MRI, responsible for their own practice within Radiology Directorate protocols and procedures in line with trust and national policies. The role will also involve training and supervising junior members of staff, students and other trainees visiting the department and acting as the authorised person in the MRI department in line with MHRA guidelines.

  • The post holder is required to complete clinical competency, complete inductions and take part in the annual appraisal process with a personal development plan.
  • Post holder will work without director supervision or support in out of hours service, required to work on a mobile scanner as and when necessary to support the service.
  • Perform a range of MRI procedures including complex clinical cases, manage patients’ priority as appropriate and act independently using professional, analytical and reasoning skills.
  • Assisting senior radiographic colleagues, superintendent radiographers, principal radiographers in the organisation and function of day‑to‑day management in the radiological sciences.
  • Be a key member of the MRI team.
  • Take responsibility of MRI safety screening and ensure all patients are safety checked and suitable for MRI scan.
  • Supervise and support junior staff and promote maintenance of an efficient, effective and high‑quality service for all users.
  • Manage and report any equipment/power failure.
  • Actively promote and participate in clinical audit.
  • Undertake all MRI examinations as directed to an acceptable standard, seek guidance as appropriate and aim to achieve and promote “quality” in all aspects of the Radiology service incorporating clinical tutorials.
  • Ensure the safety of self, staff and service users with regard to the use of ionising radiations in accordance with the Health & Safety at Work Act and Local Rules of the Radiological Safety Committee.
  • Produce high quality images which are accurately labelled and appropriate for the indicated pathology.
  • Ensure completion of all mandatory training and competency to use the required equipment and take part in the appraisal process.
  • Participate, as required, in Directorate Role Development programmes, e.g. IV training.
  • Have responsibility for providing and maintaining a high‑quality MRI service; liaise with other staff groups and departments within the Trust as required.
  • Attend statutory training days and fulfil CPD commitment; keep up to date with current imaging, professional and hospital issues.
  • Collaborate with other interprofessional colleagues and undertake all MRI examinations as directed by Consultant Radiologists, Principal MRI Radiographer, Superintendent Radiographers and senior colleagues.
  • Develop expertise and practical competence within MRI, which may involve postgraduate study.
  • Care for patients’ needs, attend to their welfare and encourage and practice “first time right” radiography whilst striving to promote “quality”.
  • Communicate information and instructions to patients and their relatives effectively, particularly where there are barriers such as cognitive impairment, illness, hearing or sight impairment and those who are anxious or in pain.
  • Ensure safety of self, staff and patients/visitors with regard to the use of MRI scanning equipment and adhere to MHRA and local Operational guidelines.
  • Use all equipment in a safe and competent manner in accordance with good practice and adhere to MHRA and local Operational Guidelines.
  • Report any operational problems, deal with room breakdowns and accidents, completing all relevant paperwork.
  • Adhere to and apply all relevant Health and Safety legislation and guidance.
  • Maintain strict confidence when dealing with patients, staff and other Health Service business information in accordance with Trust Policy and the Data Protection Legislation.
  • Use and instruct others on the required functions of the computerised Radiology Patient Administration System and Radiology Information System (PACS and RIS).
  • Actively participate in the education and training of all staff, including the Directorate Preceptor Programme for newly qualified staff.
  • Ensure compliance with the Trust’s risk management policies and procedures.
  • Train and supervise the clinical work/assessment of student radiographers/assistant practitioners.
