Deputy Service Nurse Manager - Harold McCauley House

The role of the Deputy Service Nurse Manager is to be responsible, through management and staff leadership, for promoting and ensuring the highest standards of care, in compliance with statutory requirements, to meet the physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs of the residents within the Christian ethos of PCI. To support the Service Nurse Manager in all aspects of the management of the service.

Responsibilities
  • To assist in exercising effective leadership in the Home and set a high standard of qualitycare by directing the work of staff in accordance with the aims and objectives ofthe Council for Social Witness, the NMC Code of Practice and NISCC standards
  • To assist in ensuring nursing staff levels are at all times maintained in accordance with guidelines.Setting and maintaining the right skill mix of staff.
  • To promote and ensure a high standard of care and an atmosphere suitable for meeting the physical,social, emotional and spiritual needs of the residents
  • To assist in the delegation, supervision and co-ordination of the work of the nursing staff.
  • To liaise with and to assist the medical staff and other professional contacts/multidisciplinary teams inthe treatment, direct care giving, wellbeing and safety of residents, ensuring that necessary data isavailable to medical staff
  • To comply with clinical procedures in accordance with the Board’s policies at the time
  • To maintain and promote good personal direct contact with the individual residents.
  • To maintain and promote full communication and co-operation with all persons involved in residentcare and resident’s relatives
  • To comply with NMC Code of Professional Conduct and all in-house Policies and Procedures.
  • To act up in the absence of the Home Manager to ensure the smooth running of the Home and attendLocal Support Committee meetings and give a report to the meeting in the absence of the HomeManager.
  • To be aware of Health and Safety standards in relation to equipment/services in the Home
  • To be aware of all complaints, taking immediate corrective action and reporting to the Home Managerin accordance with the Board’s policy.
  • To assist in the full assessment of residents’ needs and abilities, and participate in the regular reviewof these assessments and ensure they are carried out within the time scale
  • To participate in the formulation and carrying out comprehensive care plans, which address residents’physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs and give regular feed back to residents/relatives.
  • To assist in ensuring that day areas are used and that active rehabilitation and therapy programmesare undertaken
  • To participate in clinical audits to assess the effectiveness of the service provided
  • To accept responsibility for continuing his/her own professional development
  • To participate in organising the admission of residents ensuring that other staff are aware of theresident’s condition and needs.
  • To participate and ensure that correct, up to date and neat records of residents’ care are kept at alltimes and held securely and confidentially.
  • To assist in the preparation of staff rotas, the checking of time sheets and the completion of salaryreturns for Head Office as required
  • To participate in, supervise the custody, administration, recording and maintenance of drug stocksaccording to the HSSPS regulation and in accordance with your grade of training and UKCC registration
  • To assist in maintaining careful checks of stock levels of surgical stores, stationery and other stores.
  • To follow Board procedures for the maintenance and repair of equipment
  • To ensure, when in charge, that all fire appliances are serviceable and checked regularly. Ensure thatstaff are familiar with actions in the event of a fire and hold periodic drills
  • To be familiar with all the Board’s Policies and Procedures relating to the Home.
  • To take responsibility for ensuring that training needs are met within the Home and provide continuingupdates and support
  • To be a Facilitator for Dementia Care Training
  • To actively participate in and support other staff in attaining QCF Awards
  • To attend and participate in in-service training as needs arise and disseminate training to other staff
  • Mentor students on placement in the Home
  • To keep updated on developments and techniques in Nursing Care for the overall benefit of theresidents.
  • To participate in the selection and interviewing of new staff in the absence of the Home Manager.
  • To ensure the Home is a safe environment for the residents, staff and visitors alike.
  • To be aware of the Board’s Health and Safety Policy ensuring that related procedures are carried outcorrectly, report and record all accidents of residents, staff and visitors.
  • To attend fire lectures and be aware of fire procedure in the area of work
  • To participate in the appraisal/supervision of staff systems within the Home to ensure all aspects ofHome life are delivered to a high standard
  • To help maintain good morale in the Home and promote sound organisation, fair and clear staffrelationships and good communication
  • To liaise closely with the Home Manager and be prepared to deputise in their absence
  • To be aware of the needs of other staff within the Home’ referring them to those best able to helpwhilst maintaining confidences
  • To lead or assist with daily devotions in the Home
  • To carry out other reasonable duty that may be necessary for the proper and efficient running of theHome.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Degree, Diploma or other Nursing Qualification
  • Currently registered with the NMC
  • Knowledge and understanding of the current Regulations and Standards for the service,including the need for management and delivery of person-centred services
  • Knowledge of current health and social services available for those with additional needs
  • Computer skills for word processing and emailing
  • The ability to carry out assessments, develop and implement care plans to meet the needs ofresidents
  • A minimum of 3 year’s recent experience providing care to adults in a nursing home
  • Experience of ordering, receiving and administering medication
  • Experience of liaising with RQIA
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience of managing and supervising staff
  • Experience of carrying out supervisions and appraisals
  • Must be willing to behave in a manner which respects the Christian ethos of the PresbyterianChurch in Ireland
  • Available to work flexibly, including being on-call at night, week-ends as required Registered with, orable to register within 6 months, with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
  • Must be willing to adhere to NMC Code of Conduct and Practice
