Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Cardiac Anaesthesia

Applicationsare invited for a clinical fellow post, to complete advanced training inpaediatric cardiac anaesthesia, at the Leeds Childrens Hospital, which is partof Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust. This post will commence 4th of February2026, for a period of 12 months. The post will provide comprehensive trainingin all aspects of paediatric cardiac anaesthesia apart, from paediatric cardiactransplant anaesthesia.

Thesuccessful candidate will join an enthusiastic and dynamic paediatricanaesthetic team consisting of 22 paediatric anaesthetists, 6 paediatriccardiac anaesthetists and 10 PICU consultants.

Thispost would suit candidates who have completed their advanced training inpaediatric or cardiac anaesthesia (or equivalent) as per the Royal College ofAnaesthetists current curriculum. As this post is funded by the NHS, prioritywill be given to candidates who, after completing this post, could commence aconsultant post in tertiary paediatric cardiac anaesthesia in the UK.

Candidatesmust be fully registered with the General Medical Council and hold a license topractice by the intended start date.

Main duties of the job

To work with paediatric cardiacanaesthetic colleagues in the provision of a comprehensive paediatric cardiacanaesthetic service in the Leeds Children's Hospitals. To develop or consolidate expertise inpaediatric cardiac anaesthesia and fulfil all requirements for advancedtraining in paediatric cardiac anaesthesia. To maintain and contribute to theteaching and research activities, already established within the Trust. To support service plans for thespecialty, taking account of the changes in clinical practice and newtechnologies available. To participate in and progress clinicalgovernance

Thepost is for one year and can be tailored to previous experience, but themajority of time will be spent in paediatric cardiac theatres with a proportionof the time in the cardiology interventional lab and cardiac MRI. Other moduleswould include dedicated time with perfusion (2 weeks), transthoracicecho/transoesophageal echo (1 month with cardiologists and sonographers),Research/QI/Audits and congenital cardiac education in the form of monthly CCANformal teaching and involvement in departmental/PICU SIM training. Time on PICUcan be arranged depending on the needs of the individual. This post will havean out of hours banding supplement. Shift patterns are normal and long days,nights as well as some weekend commitments. The shift pattern in currently 1:8and the out of normal working hours work commitments will be on the generalpaediatric registrar rota.

About us

Leedshas one of the largest Childrens Hospitals in the country, delivering surgicalprocedures to over 12 000 children per year, including approximately 300neonates. The trust delivers around 500 congenital cardiac operations per year. Leeds congenital unit is the second largestunit in the UK for interventional cardiology procedures, with around 600congenital, 100 electrophysiology and 50 pacing procedures per year. Itprovides paediatric cardiac anaesthesia services for patients from the localpopulation as well as, a very large tertiary referral area. Other specialistpaediatric services in Leeds include laparoscopic and robotic surgery, airwaysurgery, liver and renal transplant, neurosurgery, and major plasticreconstructive surgery. The trust is also a paediatric major trauma centre witha 16 bed PICU, a 6 bed HDU and a tertiary NICU.

OBJECTIVESOF THE POST

Thisis a clinical, as well as an academic post and hence the appointee will beexpected to actively participate in research projects. Access to paper based aswell as electronic publications is available in the hospital library and withinthe anaesthetic department. The involvement of trainees in research isencouraged and supervision is provided. PC access and other I.T. support isalso available.

Qualifications
  • Full GMC Registration

  • Is up to date and fit to practise safely and is aware of own training needs.
  • Medically fit to fulfil ALL aspects of the post, and to be able to respond quickly to emergencies, as necessary.

  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients & colleagues demonstrated by one of the following
  • Applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English.
  • OR achieved the minimum score of 7 across all 4 of the following categories in the academic IELTS in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing
  • An overall minimum score of 7.5) OR achieved the minimum Grade B across all 4 of the following categories in the OET in medicine in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application
  • Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. (You must provide your candidate number)
  • If applicants believe they have adequate communication skills, but do not have evidence in one of the above forms, they must provide alternative supporting evidence of language skills
  • CCT or equivalent in Anaesthesia
  • 6 months from CCT at time of application
Experience
  • Has at least 7 years experience in anaesthesia and have completed at least 6-12 months advanced training (or equivalent) in either Paediatric or Cardiac Anaesthesia.
  • Must be able to demonstrate a good level of clinical experience and competence in anaesthesia.
  • Must have completed higher Paediatric Anaesthesia Training Module. Experience of providing anaesthesia for children.
  • Must demonstrate an understanding of the principles of evidence-based medicine.
  • Experience of training and teaching medical students and postgraduate doctors in small and large groups
  • Experience of participation in regular clinical audit. Knowledge of the audit process.
  • Experience of training and teaching medical students and postgraduate doctors in small and large groups
  • Well-organised, good time management skills. Effective interpersonal skills. Demonstrates ability to relate to colleagues and work within a team
