About the Service

Children's Services provide a range of highly specialist services to vulnerable children and young people, helping them to reach their potential. Services are delivered directly to children and their families within extensive statutory frameworks. This often requires close working with various stakeholders such as parents and carers, schools, health services, police and voluntary organisations. These are sensitive areas of work that are of significant importance to the community.

About the Role

As a Travel and Assessment Team Assistant, you will be part of the Children, Families and Lifelong Learning directorate and join our School Travel and Assessment team, who ensure the efficient and effective delivery of Home to School Transport services. We undertake operational tasks and processes in coordination with contracted transport operators, parents, schools, and other internal and external agencies. In this assistant role, you will help provide information, guidance and finance support to these service users and partners, making sure enquiries are handled promptly and in line with Council policies and government guidelines. All tasks are carried out with an emphasis on attention to detail, high levels of customer service and safeguarding.

You will play a vital supporting role in the team's mission to deliver and monitor the home-to-school transport service for children across the county. This is a complex, statutory area of work that requires strict adherence to policies and procedures. The Travel and Assessment Assistant undertakes a variety of support tasks essential to the smooth running of the service. You will work collaboratively with team members to provide a high‑quality, efficient support service that contributes to improving outcomes for children. This includes performing more complex clerical and finance duties, with a priority on ensuring all correspondence from families and partners are answered within agreed timescales. Day to day, your duties will vary depending on service requirements, and you will play a key role in providing a responsive support to the team, adapting as needs arise. We continuously seek ways to improve customer satisfaction, and you will work with the team to implement improvements and maintain a consistent approach across the service.

In order to be considered for shortlisting, your application will clearly evidence the following skills and align with our behaviours:

  • Excellent customer service skills, with the ability to go the extra mile in meeting people's needs

  • An understanding of safeguarding procedures
  • Flexibility to work from home and independently learn when required
  • An ability to plan effectively

To apply, alongside your CV, you will be asked to answer the following questions:

  • Describe your experience in providing excellent customer service. Can you give an example of a time you went above and beyond to meet someone's needs?
  • What is your understanding of confidentiality in a work setting? Provide an example of how you ensured sensitive information was kept secure in a previous role.
  • Please outline your experience with administrative or financial tasks. Why are attention to detail and organisation important in these tasks?
  • How do you prioritise tasks when you have multiple deadlines to meet?
