Who are we?

GWR is the proud custodian of Brunel's railway - one of the most prestigious networks in the world. We have some of the newest trains in the country and exciting plans to extend our services. With more than one hundred million passenger journeys each year, we carry people to over 275 stations in the South West, from Cornwall and South Wales to London, passing through beautiful country and some of the UK's top tourist destinations.

We are transforming the way people think about train travel, empowering our team of over 6,000 people from all different backgrounds to make it a great experience for our customers. Together, we will revalue rail as a very special way to travel - relaxing, fast, efficient, friendly and fun.

About the role?

As an Energy Manager, you will be responsible for managing the utilities (electricity, gas and water) contracts within GWR, ensuring value for money and carbon emissions/usage is monitored and reported. You will work to identify opportunities to reduce consumption, develop business plans as required and fulfil all internal and external energy and environmental reporting requirements.

Your main responsibilities will be?

  • Manage utilities contracts, ensuring meter reads are undertaken/automated metering is in place, billing is up to date and invoicing is accurate. You will manage relationships with utilities companies, including fault resolution, and lead contract review meetings as required.
  • Establish an energy and water metering plan as a basis for accurate reporting of energy use to multiple stakeholders, to support legislative responsibilities.
  • Work with procurement to evaluate contract renewals and tenders.
  • Ensure accurate reporting of all utilities consumption is compiled on a periodic basis.
  • Work with the Senior Environment Manager & Assurance Strategy Manager to capture and submit carbon emission reports as required. You will help identify better and more efficient ways to report carbon data, as well as co-author the annual Energy report as required by ISO50001.
  • Identify energy saving opportunities and work with the Property team, Engineering team and Senior Environment Manager & Assurance Strategy Manager to submit business cases and implement improvements.
  • Support the Environment team with any required carbon emission policy development, advising on compliance with all applicable energy and carbon related legislation and industry standards.
  • Support the Senior Environment Manager & Assurance Strategy Manager and Engineering Services Manager to maintain and develop ISO 50001 management system compliance and continual improvement.
  • Work with the Environment team to develop an internal communications plan and a programme of behavioural change across the organisation to reduce energy consumption.
  • Provide support to all GWR teams in understanding their own energy consumption and developing plans for improvement.

About you?

As a successful candidate in this role, you will have:

  • Knowledge of plant and equipment (especially heating, lighting).
  • Knowledge of the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) and development of Net Zero strategy development and target setting.
  • Knowledge of energy and climate change legislation.
  • An understanding of the current and likely future development of the UK energy and water market.
  • Excellent communicator and team player with the ability to maintain effective relationships with stakeholders. You will have the ability to manage your own time and work independently.
  • Excellent report writing skill, with experience in writing compelling business cases, and will be proactive in seeking out improvement opportunities.
  • Excel and data reporting/analysis skills.
  • Experience in carbon reporting, compiling and submitting data for external verification.
  • Experience in identifying and implementing energy reduction measures across a multi-site portfolio.
  • Experience and a good understanding of managing utilities contracts, metering and invoice management. As well as the use of Monitoring and Targeting (M&T) approaches for energy reduction.
