Healthcare Support Worker (HCSW) Opportunities

We are looking for individuals who, like us, believe our values Together – Safe Kind Excellent are at the heart of patient care, defining the way all staff work and behave. Whether you are an experienced Healthcare Support Worker or just starting out in care, if you are caring, compassionate and looking for a new challenge, then we have a role for you to take the next steps in your healthcare career.

You will be recruited at Band 2 during your induction and initial time in this role. Following completion of your Care Certificate and competencies you will then move up to Band 3. Please note existing HCSWs/TSWs/MSWs at CUH will be employed as Band 3 from their start date.

Development opportunities

CUH is committed to education, training and development; joining as a Healthcare Support Worker will enable you to access the following:

  • Completion of the National Care Certificate
  • Skills development
  • Access to Functional skills in English and maths training to enhance knowledge and confidence in literacy and numeracy and English for speakers of other languages (ESOL)
  • All new staff will receive further details about development routes on their induction programme

Please note you will be required to undertake a Functional Skills Test as part of your interview assessment. You will need to pass this in order to proceed to a Conditional Offer. This is applicable if you are not currently working as a HCSW at CUH.

Role responsibilities

As a Healthcare Support Worker you will assist the Registered Nurses in the delivery of care to our patients, you will work as part of a team ensuring our patients are cared for in a Kind, Safe and Excellent way, ensuring they are treated with dignity at all times.

About the role

The role is varied, equally challenging and rewarding. You will have the opportunity to really make a difference to the experience of patients. Full time and part time posts will be considered, and shifts include long days, nights, weekends, and public holidays. Our HCSWs will need the flexibility to cover varied shift patterns.

As part of this role you will be required to:

  • Support to serve meals to patients
  • Provide personal care to patients
  • Take observations such as blood pressure measurements, pulse, urinalysis and temperature
  • Support patients with moving in their clinical area
  • All other clinical duties as required

As a Healthcare Support Worker (HCSW) you will work under the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional, usually a Nurse or Midwife, to ensure safe, kind and compassionate care for patients.

CUH offers a comprehensive four week clinical support staff induction programme and support to achieve the National Care Certificate. This will equip you to find your feet within the organisation and quickly feel like a valued member of the clinical team/s. Please note it is mandatory to attend every day of the induction programme.

We are currently recruiting for a wide variety of adult wards. Please note ward allocations will be offered based upon current vacancies within the trust. You must be available to work a variety of shift patterns including Early, Late and Night shifts. Please indicate your availability at interview.

If successful you will be added to a centralised pool for 6 months. During this time a ward or clinic allocation will be sourced for you. Please note after 6 months you will be removed and subsequently withdrawn if an allocation cannot be confirmed for you.

As per Home Office guidelines, please be aware that, unfortunately, the Trust is unable to offer sponsorship for this particular position.

Due to Home Office immigration rules, a full time permanent vacancy cannot be filled by individuals on a Student visa. Therefore, please be advised that if you are a Student visa holder, we will not be able to offer you a full time permanent contract unless you have:

  • applied for a Graduate visa
  • or you will have successfully completed your course and have applied for a Graduate visa before the anticipated start date of your employment
