Overview

The service delivers a range of upper and lower GI physiological investigations and therapies, including high resolution oesophageal manometry, ambulatory pH/impedance studies, anorectal physiology, endoanal ultrasound scanning, rectal irrigation, pelvic floor retraining, and sacral nerve stimulation (temporary and permanent). The postholder will deliver a range of upper and lower GI physiological investigations and help co-ordinate and support further development of the GI Physiology service. The role requires eligibility to become an Independent Healthcare Practitioner with the Association of GI Physiologists, and eligibility for state registration with the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists (RCCP) or the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Flexibility to work evenings and some Saturdays may be required in the future. The post is subject to Disclosure to the Disclosure and Barring Service due to the involvement with vulnerable people.
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated Clinical Physiologist/Scientist to join our team in the Department of GI Physiology, Pelvic Floor Services and Research at The Churchill Hospital, Oxford. It is essential that the person is enthusiastic, motivated and passionate about providing high quality, safe, patient-centred care. Good communication skills are essential, as is the ability to work autonomously and as part of a multidisciplinary team. The clinical team includes Specialist Nurses, an Assistant Practitioner and a Clinical Scientist, supported by administrative staff, to provide a high-quality and seamless service to patients.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver a range of upper and lower GI physiological investigations.
  • Co-ordinate and support the development of the GI Physiology service.
  • Work within a multidisciplinary team to provide high-quality, safe, patient-centred care.
Qualifications and Experience
  • BSc (Hons) life science or biological degree (e.g., clinical physiology).
  • Desirable criteria: Level 5 Leadership qualification.
  • Desirable: Teaching qualification; BSc (Hons) Clinical Physiology (Gastroenterology) or BSc (Hons) in life science with University Certificate in Clinical GI Physiology (UCCPD) Parts 1 and 2; AGIP professional exams in Clinical GI Physiology or STP GI Physiology training; registration with RCCP or HCPC.
  • Member or working towards membership of the Association of GI Physiologists (AGIP) and competence in high-resolution oesophageal manometry and ambulatory 24-hour oesophageal impedance/pH monitoring in adults.
  • Competence in anorectal physiology and endoanal ultrasound scanning in adults.
  • Experience with temporary and permanent sacral nerve stimulation procedures.
  • Knowledge of calibration of measurement equipment and routine and specialist GI Physiology methods.
  • Evidence of professional updating within the last twelve months.
  • IT literacy (MS Word and Excel).
  • Ability to work with patients undergoing stressful and sensitive investigations; time management and organizational skills.
  • Clinical competence, empathy, reliability, punctuality, motivation, flexibility and willingness to learn and train.
  • Aptitude for technical troubleshooting and problem solving, with the ability to recognise limits and seek help when needed.
Desirable Criteria
  • 26-hr oesophageal impedance/pH monitoring in paediatrics.
  • R&D experience relevant to GI Physiology (data collection/analysis, audit and evaluation).
  • IT proficiency beyond MS Word/Excel; ability to contribute to research culture.
  • Patient-focused approach with excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work with patients undergoing stressful investigations and to support a research-aware culture.
  • Manual dexterity and clinical credibility.
  • Willingness to learn and train; good judgement about limits and when to ask for help.
