A prominent health board in Wales seeks a Consultant Anaesthetist specializing in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia. The role involves providing care for patients undergoing cardiac procedures at Morriston Hospital and managing on-call responsibilities. Applicants must be registered with the GMC, licensed to practice, and have a specialization in Cardiothoracic anaesthesia. This position offers the opportunity to work within a subspecialist group and contribute to high-quality patient care in a dynamic environment.
We are looking for a Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Critical Care.
The postholder will join a subspecialist group of 7 substantive consultants with an interest in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Cardiothoracic Critical Care. The post will involve sessions at Morriston Hospital on a regular basis (See 'provisional job plan' in supporting document 'Job Description and Person Specification' for more information).
The Swansea Cardiothoracic Unit is contracted to perform 700 cardiac surgical procedures per annum for a population that stretches from the South Wales Valleys region to the coastline of mid-and west Wales. The cardiac work comprises a combination of coronary revascularisation, valve replacement/repair, major aortic surgery and other minimally invasive procedures such as TAVI.
The Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee (WHSCC) has proposed a Single Centre for Adult Thoracic surgery for South Wales. An Independent Panel has recommended that Morriston Hospital, Swansea should be the location of this Centre. This will therefore involve setting up thoracic surgical services for 1000-1300 cases per annum, with a 20% predicted increase to accommodate future growth for cancer and non-cancer indications.On call commitments will be to the 1 in 8 Cardiac On-Call Rota.
The successful applicant will be responsible for the provision of emergency and elective anaesthesia for cardiothoracic surgery and minimally invasive procedures, to the population of SBUHB, within the scope of practice reflected in the provisional 'Job Plan' (please see Job Description). They will also provide services to the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit.
The on-call commitment will be to the 1: 8 Cardiac Rota at Morriston Hospital. On Call responsibilities include: care for patients on the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU), the provision of anaesthetic care for emergency cardiothoracic operations and cardiac re-vascularisations as well as supporting the cardiac on call resident doctor.
Swansea Bay University Health Board has responsibility for the health of around 390,000 people in the Neath Port Talbot and Swansea areas, with a budget of around £1 billion and employing 12,500 people. We are a University Health Board working in partnership with Swansea University, Swansea School of Medicine, the School of Health Science and the Institute of Life Science. The HB has three major hospitals providing a range of services: Morriston and Singleton hospitals in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot hospital in Baglan, Port Talbot.
Mental Health and learning Disabilities services are provided both in hospital settings (Cefn Coed Hospital, Swansea Caswell clinic and Taith Newydd at Glanrhyd Bridgend) and other community settings.
We also have community hospital and primary care resource centres providing clinical services outside the main hospitals.
The Health Board is part of A Regional Collaboration for Health (ARCH), which is a partnership with Hywel Dda UHB and Swansea University. Aimed at improving the wellbeing and wealth of Southwest Wales.
