Job description

Are you ready for a role where your support truly matters? At MacIntyre School, you will work with children and young people with learning disabilities and autism who have a wide range of complex needs and behaviours. Some days will be extremely challenging, but your patience, understanding, and commitment will help students overcome barriers, develop coping strategies, and achieve personal milestones. The rewards of seeing their progress are unmatched.

We are looking for dedicated Learning Support Assistants to join our team and make a lasting impact. You will work closely with students aged 10‑19, supporting them one‑to‑one and in small groups, helping them grow, learn, and navigate challenging behaviours in a safe and supportive environment.

Why This Role Is Special
  • Support a range of behaviours: help students manage emotional, social, or sensory challenges, providing guidance, reassurance, and practical strategies.
  • Every day is different: from cooking, music, and sensory play to community activities, your days will be dynamic, hands‑on, and full of opportunities to make a difference.
  • No experience needed: whether you are new to SEN or have experience with children with learning disabilities, we will provide full training and support.
  • A career with purpose: this is an opportunity to grow your skills and build a long‑term career supporting young people who need it most.
What You Will Do
  • Support students one‑to‑one and in small groups, helping them manage behaviours and develop life skills.
  • Work closely with teachers and the wider team to deliver creative, engaging lessons tailored to students’ strengths.
  • Celebrate every success, from small achievements to major milestones.
  • Provide consistent, compassionate support during challenging moments, helping students feel safe and understood.

If you’re ready for a challenging, rewarding, and life‑changing role where your support truly matters, we want to hear from you. Join a team that is passionate about making a real difference every single day.

Personal Qualities & Skills
  • Patient, resilient, and able to stay calm in challenging situations.
  • Passionate about supporting young people with complex needs and helping them reach their potential.
  • A team player who thrives in a supportive, collaborative environment.
  • Excited to learn, grow, and make a tangible difference every day.

MacIntyre School offers an innovative and challenging curriculum individually tailored to provide each student with the best possible learning opportunities and outcomes. It is focused on developing communication, functional skills and independence in context. Learning takes place throughout the waking day whether at school, in the residential houses or out in the community, where we provide an exciting range of off‑site learning activities.

Learning Activities May Include
  • Life skills (e.g. using public transport, shopping, cooking and cleaning)
  • Physical exercise (e.g. climbing, swimming, walking, water sports)
  • Work experience (e.g. on a farm)
  • Community access (e.g. in shops or cafes)
  • Class‑based activities (e.g. music, dance & creative arts)

Good at our Ofsted inspection, here are some of the reasons you’ll enjoy joining our team: "Adults never stop wanting the best for the pupils. They see what each pupil might be capable of and work patiently and determinedly towards it. This is a school of aspiration and positivity." "Leaders know their school well and have a deep understanding of the complex context. The strong leadership from senior leaders has already resulted in much success. Staff are extremely proud to work at this school, and rightly so."

Some Things You Need to Know
  • Students can present with behaviour that is challenging – we’ll give you specialist training to help them manage their behaviour.
  • You will need to provide personal care.
