Job title : Personalized forecasting of the therapeutic response of triple negative breast cancer through MRIinformed biomechanistic simulations and machine learning (PROBREAST)

Research line / Scientific-technical services : Computational models of breast cancer.

JOB LOCATION AND SCHEDULE : School of Civil Engineering, Mon-Fri 9.00-14.00 & 15.00-17.00 (35h / week).

1) TASKS

The present position of research support technician is opened with the objective of carrying out the following tasks within the framework of the research lines of the project “Personalized forecasting of the therapeutic response of triple negative breast cancer through MRI-informed biomechanistic simulations and machine learning (PROBREAST)” :

1) Definition of a spatiotemporal model of triple-negative breast cancer growth and response to neoadjuvant therapy, including tumor cell dynamics, mechanical effects, and the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of therapeutic agents.

2) Development of accurate and efficient computational methods for the personalized prediction of triple-negative breast cancer growth and response to neoadjuvant therapy based on isogeometric analysis.

3) Analysis of the predictions, parameters, and biomarkers obtained from the personalized models for each patient and across patient cohorts.

4) Design of machine learning classifiers informed by biomechanistic metrics to predict pathological response to treatment in triple-negative breast cancer patients.

5) Development of computer code in MATLAB and Python to implement tasks 1–4.

6) Contribution to the preparation of written and visual materials for the presentation of scientific results at conferences and in scientific publications. The position will last until the ending date of the grant that funds this research project.

Applications will be evaluated on a 100-point scale according to the following criteria :

A. Academic record (maximum 35 points)

A.1. Up to 10 points will be awarded based on the average grade of the required (and additional if any) degrees, weighted by the number of credits per degree. Preference will be given to candidates with degrees in mathematics, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, or biomedical engineering. For degrees in statistics, physics, or other engineering disciplines, the average grade will be weighted at 70%. For degrees other than those mentioned, a weighting of 10% will be applied.

A.2. The remaining 25 points will be awarded based on the grades of courses related to the project's tasks, as follows : up to 1 point per ECTS credit in subjects related to calculus and linear algebra; up to 2 points per ECTS credit in subjects related to numerical methods and scientific programming; and up to 3 points per ECTS credit in subjects related to differential equations, mathematical modeling, computational mechanics, optimization, solid and fluid mechanics, and the application of mathematics, physics, and engineering to biology and medicine. These subjects will be weighted in accordance with the methods established for the degree’s average grade, as per section A.1.

B. Experience related to the project tasks (maximum 30 points)

B.1. Experience using spatiotemporal models based on partial differential equations in science and engineering problems, particularly in solid and fluid mechanics, biology, and medicine (maximum 15 points). Each month of experience will be awarded up to 1.5 points.

B.2. Experience using advanced computational methods and software packages to simulate models based on partial differential equations in science and engineering problems, especially in solid and fluid mechanics, biology, and medicine (maximum 15 points). Each month of experience will be awarded up to 1.5 points.

B.3. Experience using computer-aided design (CAD) software and 3D visualization tools for virtual models (maximum 10 points). Each month of experience will be awarded up to 1 point.

B.4. Other academic merits (maximum 10 points). Awards, scholarships, and contracts related to the project tasks and obtained through competitive calls will be valued at up to 2.5 points each.

C. English language proficiency (maximum 10 points) A maximum of 10 points will be awarded for the provable knowledge of an intermediate or upper level of English language in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference (A2 : 2 points, B1 : 4 points; B2 : 6 points; C1 : 8 points; C2 : 10 points). For native English speakers, a C2 level will be considered.

D. Personal interview (maximum 25 points) Candidates who score more than 50 points in sections A–C will be invited to a personal interview, where they will have to demonstrate their ability and knowledge relevant to the tasks to be performed.

4) SELECTION A minimum score of 65 points will be required to be eligible for the contract.

A waiting list (reserves) will be created with the candidates who meet this condition. If no applicant achieves a score above 65 points, the position may remain unfilled.
