The University of British Columbia (UBC) is seeking applications from neurology specialists for a two-year clinical-research fellowship for the Class of 2028 Edmond J. Safra Fellowship in Movement Disorders. The successful candidate will begin their two-year training in July 2026.

The Edmond J. Safra Fellow will complete their training at UBC’s Pacific Parkinson’s Research Centre and UBC Movement Disorders Clinic at the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health (DMCBH), under the mentorship of movement disorder neurologist and researcher Dr. Silke Appel-Cresswell and the movement disorders clinical and research faculty. Fellows train in a busy interdisciplinary tertiary level movement disorders clinic with exposure to the whole range of movement disorders including specialized clinics such as advanced infusion therapies, atypical parkinsonism clinic, genetic movement disorders and ataxia, REM Sleep Behaviour Disorders clinic, botulinum toxin injection clinics including EMG and ultrasound guidance as well as collaborations with the Huntington’s clinic, the DBS Clinic (neurosurgery) and the BC Brain Wellness Program.

Fellows will be responsible for conducting monthly Movement disorders rounds (alternating research presentation, journal club and video rounds). Fellows are expected to contribute to the weekly clinical research rounds in movement disorders and attend the Neuroscience Grand Rounds as well as attend and present at provincial video case discussions. Fellows may teach neurology residents and medical students. They are also expected to participate in training courses, e.g. with the Canadian Movement Disorder Society and the MDS.

Fellows are expected to develop and manage at least one dedicated research project with close mentorship from faculty. In the first year, the emphasis is on clinical learning while a research project is developed and in the second-year research activities will be the focus while clinical learning is refined, depending on progress and personal goals. Fellows are encouraged and supported to present research at national and international conferences as well as patient education meetings. The Pacific Parkinson’s Research Centre runs a wide range of research studies from mechanisms to clinical trials and implementation studies in Parkinson’s and other movement disorders.
