About the Opportunity

The Vascular Surgery Associate Physician is a licensed (Associate Physician) physician employed by the Nova Scotia Health to provide clinical care under the supervision of a fully licensed physician. They will have clearly defined clinical duties within the Department of Surgery under the Division of Vascular Surgery in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. The Vascular Surgery Associate Physician would primarily be responsible for direct patient care activities under the supervision of an attending Vascular Surgeon. The overall supervision of the Vascular Associate Physician will be directed by the Head of the Division of Vascular Surgery or designate and indirectly to the Executive Medical Director, Central Zone, NSH.

Clinical Responsibilities
• Functions as a member of the Vascular Surgery team. Makes regular rounds with supervising staff and fellow residents on the wards and in the SICU as required.
• Works with attending staff, nurses, and house staff, and other members of the health care team in the development of the overall patient care program.
• Communicates with patients, families, referring and family physicians concerning patient management plans.
• Performs and documents admission history and physical examinations, progress notes, discharge summaries, death certificates, etc.
• Manages the day-to-day care of patients, including writing medical orders on charts and responding to emergencies, in consultation with attending staff.
• Performs procedures within the scope of their demonstrated competence including: the insertion of peripheral intravenous lines, initiation of intravenous medication, taking blood samples for diagnostic purposes or arterial blood gases, insertion of Foley catheters, insertion and removal of intra-aortic balloon pumps, insertion of central lines, arterial lines, removal of chest tubes, intubation and management of ventilation, adjustment of inotropes and vasopressors. In any and all of the above the associate will not proceed until full training and competence has been established with sign off by the Division Head or designate.
• Arranges consultations with other departments for care and investigation.
• Follows through on investigations and arranges follow-up outpatient visits.
• Attends educational sessions and rounds as time permits. Interacts with and orientates clinical clerks and PGY1’s, new to the Vascular Service.
• Participates in on-call responsibilities of the service.
• Assists in the operating room when on call or when no residents are available during the day. At no time will the associate physician be left alone in the operating room. The associate physician will not be responsible for any intra-operative decision making. The associate physician may be trained to do simple tasks such as skin stapling or skin suturing but again, always under the guidance of the staff member.
• These responsibilities are meant to be indicative of the job responsibilities and duties and are not inclusive

  • Must have obtained (in writing) Review of Qualifications from The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia prior to application deadline. Please upload this with your application
  • CMPA coverage required
  • ACLS certification required
  • Good command of written and spoken English
  • Must be able to promote and maintain good interpersonal skills
  • Completion of the equivalence of a rotating internship and postgraduate training and experience in Vascular Surgeryare consider assets
  • Physical demand - Must be able to sit, stand, walk and perform duties as outlined above
  • Mental and Visual demand – High; must be able to deal with stressful situations
  • Competencies in other languages an asset; French preferred

Compensation and Benefits

$52.70 - $67.12 Hourly
