A leading safety management firm in Johannesburg is seeking a qualified OH&S Manager to develop and implement comprehensive SHE management systems. The ideal candidate will have over 5 years of experience in safety management within an industrial environment, preferably in food/FMCG. The role involves leading risk assessments, coordinating OH&S committees, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. This position is essential in fostering a safety-first culture and overseeing safety initiatives across operations.

Job description
Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement comprehensive SHE management systems, ensuring compliance with legal standards.
  • Lead risk assessments (HIRA/ERA, task-based, JSA/JHA, ERA), maintain the risk register and drive implementation of control measures.
  • Coordinate OH&S committees, safety representatives and stakeholder engagement (including the Department of Labour and/or unions where applicable).
  • Plan and conduct OH&S inspections and internal audits; manage external audits and DoL inspections.
  • Lead incident and accident investigations, root cause analysis and corrective/preventive actions; track and report OH&S KPIs.
  • Lead investigations for all incidents and near misses, using root cause analysis tools.
  • Ensure prompt implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
  • Maintain and report on SHE KPIs, trends, and action plans.
  • Use data insights to identify focus areas and drive proactive interventions.
  • Lead, mentor, and manage the performance of the junior level management.
  • Promote a safety-first mindset through coaching and on-the-floor engagement.
  • Oversee emergency preparedness (fire, evacuation, refrigerant leaks, medical emergencies etc) and first responder arrangements.
  • Collaborate with Production, Engineering, HR and Quality/Food Safety to integrate OH&S into daily operations and projects.
Requirements:
  • Minimum Diploma/Degree in Safety Management, Environmental Health, Engineering or a related field (NQF 67+).
  • Recognised OH&S qualification (e.g. SAMTRAC, NEBOSH, Environmental Management or equivalent).
  • 57+ years OH&S experience in an industrial/manufacturing environment, preferably food/FMCG, with at least 3 years in a senior/lead OH&S role.
  • Strong working knowledge of the OHS Act and Regulations, COIDA , Env Management ,NEMA and ISO 45001.
  • Proven experience in risk assessment, incident investigation, non-conformity, audits, training and OH&S reporting in a labour intensive, shift based operation
