Overview
The Registered Peer Recovery Specialist is responsible for providing peer-to-peer support services to individuals enrolled in the Outpatient Behavioral Health Programs. The role uses lived experiences of recovery and mental health disorders to offer emotional support, share knowledge, teach skills, provide practical assistance and connect individuals with resources, communities of support and other people. Services are non-clinical, person-centered, strengths-based, wellness-focused and trauma-informed. The goal is to ensure the wellness-recovery plan reflects the needs and preferences of the individuals served to achieve measurable, personalized goals as part of a comprehensive treatment team.
Responsibilities
- Provide face-to-face interactions to support an individual achieving their self-identified level of recovery, wellness, independence or personal strengths.
- Serve as a role model of recovery, wellness and self-advocacy.
- Assist individuals or families in writing and communicating personal recovery-wellness plans and identifying ways to reach those goals using a person-centered plan.
- Provide peer-to-peer support in groups encouraging participation and self-directed participation (e.g., WRAP, Dual Recovery).
- Facilitate non-clinical peer-to-peer recovery education and wellness coaching through group activities on topics such as health, leisure activities, and community involvement strategies.
- Mentor community integration by connecting participants with community resources (social, recreational, spiritual, volunteer, educational, vocational).
- Help individuals identify community-based supports that sustain a healthy lifestyle and support the development of natural support systems.
- Provide support during the acquisition, exploration and sustaining of employment and/or educational services.
- Attend treatment team and program development meetings; participate in regular group and individual supervision to enhance professional growth and address administrative issues.
- Document all service contacts within 24 hours of contact (face-to-face, collateral, networking); ensure complete treatment-related documentation (treatment plans, progress notes, releases of information) in compliance with agency standards and applicable regulations.
- Actively communicate findings and progress with the Outpatient Behavioral Health team; maintain collaborative relationships with community referring agencies to formulate appropriate intervention strategies.
- Attend mandatory trainings and share the recovery perspective with non-peer staff; develop and maintain positive relationships with community resources, treatment providers and other partners (mental health, health care, shelters, landlords, detox centers, etc.).
Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
Certification & Licensure: Registered as a Peer Recovery Specialist in Virginia is required.
Required Qualifications:
- Ability to positively interact with persons with mental illness, substance use disorders and developmental disabilities, their families, agency staff and community members.
- Ability to provide active listening, education and assistive supports to consumers and family members.
- Good personal management skills including time management, organization, dependability, and independence.
- Ability to work as a team member with agency staff and others on behalf of Recovery initiatives.
- General knowledge and understanding of mental illness, substance use, and developmental disabilities.
- Knowledge and understanding of recovery principles and components.
- Knowledge of support counseling practices and techniques.
- Knowledge of local mental health/substance use disorder systems and local services available in the community (public, private, and volunteer organizations).
- Ability to adapt to changes following program evaluation.
