Requirements
  • Appropriate qualification that allows registration with HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
  • Registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Cardiothoracic Surgery (no experience required after registration).
  • Sound clinical knowledge and skills in Internal Medicine and Clinical Cardiology.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Desirable: Highly skilled experience in complex cardiothoracic surgeries (heart, lungs, oesophagus, trachea).
  • Reputable professional and personal attributes.
  • Applicants must submit a completed and signed new Z83 form.
  • Preference will be given to South African citizens.
Duties
  • Perform a wide range of cardiothoracic surgeries (e.g., coronary artery bypass, valve repair/replacement, lung resections). Advanced techniques such as minimally invasive procedures and transplantation are advantageous.
  • Collaborate with cardiologists, pulmonologists, anesthesiologists and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement patient care plans.
  • Participate in pre‑operative and post‑operative patient care, including consultations, follow‑ups and complication management.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of clinical protocols and guidelines.
  • Maintain impeccable record-keeping and conduct regular clinical audits.
  • Prepare monthly reports and data analytics to inform future safe practices.
  • Assist with procurement and ensure smooth operation of the division.
  • Observe the RWOPS policies and regulations.
  • Engage in continuous professional development and stay updated with the latest advancements in cardiothoracic surgery.
  • Teach and mentor medical students, registrars, fellows and allied professionals across university platforms.
  • Conduct self‑initiated research and supervise research projects as part of dual appointment responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to yearly research output and promotion of university citizenship.
  • Observe punctuality, collegiality, teamwork, dependability and adherence to working hours.
