The Department of Logistics is one of several departments within Stellenbosch University’s (SU) Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, and is also the oldest tertiary academic department in South Africa to provide education in transport economics and logistics. The Department houses the disciplines of logistics and supply chain management, operations research, business analytics, and transport economics and is the only department at a South African university fully offering the various disciplines integrated in one department.

This role requires a candidate with experience and skills in logistics and supply chain management. Practical experience and/or teaching experience and/or research in at least three of the following are preferred: sustainable supply chain management, packaging logistics, humanitarian logistics, strategic sourcing, global dimension of supply chains, supply chain collaboration, logistics and supply chain analytics, visual data analysis, experiential learning, and artificial intelligence in logistics and supply chain management.

Job Description

Duties:

  • Delivering high quality undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in logistics and supply chain management.
  • Postgraduate research supervision on honours and master’s level.
  • Subject-related research and publication in DHET accredited journals.
  • Rendering relevant services to the University and the community, including administrative duties and serving on committees.
Inherent Criteria

Requirements:

  • A relevant master’s degree from a recognised university (e.g. masters in logistics management, master’s in supply chain management, master’s in industrial engineering with thesis topic in logistics and supply chain management, master’s in business management with thesis topic in logistics and supply chain management).
  • The ability and desire to complete a PhD in logistics and supply chain management.
  • An excellent academic track record – full transcripts for all undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications required.
  • Level of experience required (at least one of the following):

o Research experience and relevant publications in the field of logistics and supply chain management in at least one DHET accredited journal; or

o Industry experience (of at least one year) within the private or public sector; or

o Teaching experience (of at least one year) within logistics and supply chain management.

  • The ability to teach in a multilingual environment.
  • Proven digital literacy, including proficiency with the various Microsoft software programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, etc.).
  • Proven quantitative and analytical skills, including the use of visualisation software (e.g. Tableau, PowerBI, ATLAS.ti, etc.).

Short-listed candidates (those invited for interviews) will be expected to present a lecture on a designated topic to academic staff of the Department of Logistics to demonstrate their excellence in teaching, as well as their digital, analytical and data visualisation skills.

Recommendations:

  • Knowledge in at least three of the following specialisation areas: sustainable supply chain management, packaging logistics, humanitarian logistics, strategic sourcing, global dimension of supply chains, supply chain collaboration, logistics and supply chain analytics, visual data analysis, experiential learning, and artificial intelligence in logistics and supply chain management.
  • Experience in using learning management systems (e.g. Moodle).
  • Experience in working and engaging with industry.
  • Exposure in research and/or teaching within the field of transport economics.
