Job description

Business Development Manager and Licence Representative – Mining Guarantees | Johannesburg, Gauteng | Permanent

Step into a specialist role at the intersection of mining, credit risk, and strategic growth. This is a high-exposure, front-office opportunity for a commercially sharp professional who can build relationships, structure deals, and drive a mining guarantees portfolio across South Africa and the broader African market.

In this role, you will be the dedicated business development manager and licence representative for a mining guarantees division, working closely with an expert underwriting and risk team. You will engage directly with facility holders, policyholders, brokers, and other key stakeholders to grow a sophisticated book of business, structure guarantees, and ensure exceptional client service. The position combines hands‑on deal‑making with strategic market development, data-driven decision-making, and the responsibility of representing a regulated insurer in a highly specialised environment.

You will operate in a niche area focused on mine rehabilitation guarantees and related guarantee products, helping clients manage credit and performance risk associated with mining operations. The client book spans private companies and listed entities, requiring comfort in engaging credibly at the senior level and in navigating complex commercial and regulatory landscapes. This is a role for someone proactive, inquisitive, and committed to building a long‑term career in a specialist segment.

Our client is a leading, regulated financial services provider working in partnership with a specialist underwriting management team dedicated to mining guarantees. The environment is professional, entrepreneurial, and highly collaborative, with a small, expert team and a flat structure. They value strong business acumen, integrity, and a genuinely client‑centric approach, supported by robust risk, governance, and credit processes.

What You Will Do

  • Lead proactive engagement with existing and prospective facility holders, policyholders, brokers, and other stakeholders across South Africa and African export markets.

  • Develop and execute market engagement and growth strategies aligned to divisional objectives and industry trends.

  • Represent the mining guarantees division at industry events, conferences, and networking forums to deepen brand visibility and open new business channels.

  • Manage and optimise distribution channels, with a strong focus on broker relationship management and strategic partnerships.

  • Identify, develop, and manage new business leads (direct and brokered), tracking progress through the sales pipeline.

  • Oversee and coordinate the quoting process, ensuring accurate, timely responses to clients and brokers.

  • Work with the underwriting team to manage the inception and onboarding process for new facilities and policies, ensuring a seamless client experience.

  • Use data from quotes, sales, and portfolio performance to identify trends, inform strategy, and refine processes for efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Attend credit committee discussions alongside the specialist underwriting team, contributing to facility structuring and negotiation within risk appetite and policy.

  • Explain and negotiate facility terms (limits, pricing, security requirements) with clients and intermediaries, and provide product and structuring advice where required.

  • Conduct client and broker meetings to address overdue accounts, gather feedback, and reinforce long‑term relationships.

What You Bring

  • Proven experience in a front-office, client-facing role within financial services or the mining sector, ideally in guarantees, credit, treasury, or related products.

  • FAIS-compliant with RE5 completed; a BCom or additional financial qualification will be a strong advantage.

  • Demonstrated success in business development, revenue growth, and building strategic partnerships.

  • Strong understanding of market dynamics, distribution channels, and industry trends in South Africa and African export markets.

  • Excellent relationship management, communication, and negotiation skills, with the ability to engage confidently with senior stakeholders, clients, and brokers.

  • An analytical mindset, able to interpret data and convert insights into action, improvements, and better decision‑making.

  • High levels of professionalism, integrity, and client service orientation.

  • A self‑starter approach: able to work independently, take initiative, and solve problems while collaborating closely with a small specialist team.

  • Long‑term commitment and resilience, with the appetite to grow within a niche, technical segment.

What Success Looks Like

  • A growing, profitable mining portfolio with high levels of client and broker retention.

  • Strong, trusted relationships with key clients, brokers, and other stakeholders across target markets.

  • Well‑structured facilities and guarantees that balance commercial opportunity with prudent risk management and compliance.

  • Efficient, professional quoting, onboarding, and service processes that reflect a “premium service” standard.

  • Clear contribution to divisional strategy, informed by up‑to‑date market intelligence and data insights.

  • Recognised as a credible, go‑to representative of the mining guarantees division in both domestic and African markets.
