Senior Rotational Clinical Pharmacist

We have rotations across a broad range of specialities and our successful programme is designed to offer extensive clinical experience, providing high quality pharmaceutical care to patients across all sites of the Trust, giving you the skills, knowledge and understanding of the different pharmacy services in both a district general and teaching hospital setting.

This well‑established programme has been designed to support both your clinical and personal development as a senior pharmacist in a fast‑paced, dynamic and inclusive environment. The rotation is built around structured objectives, designed to ensure you gain experience and skills whilst being a valued member of the MDT, contributing to the departmental and Trust priorities.

The successful applicant will be a real team player with significant clinical experience as a registered hospital pharmacist, excellent interpersonal skills, a strong commitment to life‑long learning and meticulous attention to detail.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a hard‑working and highly motivated clinical pharmacist to join us in our Band 7 rotational programme.

This post's base site and initial rotation will be at our Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) but rotations across all sites may be possible.

This post would be suitable for an individual who is looking to develop their clinical skills across a range of specialities, as well as their leadership and managerial skills.

Key activities in each rotation
  • Act as a specialist practitioner and role model and manage the day‑to‑day pharmaceutical care of patients in the speciality
  • Attend daily consultant ward rounds in specific rotations
  • Respond to clinical queries both internally and externally
  • Produce monthly financial and activity reports including monitoring of cost savings initiatives
  • Conduct research and audit projects
  • Participate in activities such as risk management, clinical guideline development and staff training

Clinical responsibilities
  • Act as a specialist practitioner in the clinical area
  • Promote and deliver pharmaceutical care for patients within the Care Group and for all patients
  • Contribute and adhere to clinical pharmacy service standards
  • Provide highly specialised evidence‑based clinical advice and information to nursing and medical staff on the care and treatment of patients
  • Actively participate regularly in multidisciplinary ward rounds, antibiotic ward rounds and other multidisciplinary meetings, delivering and promoting high quality, cost‑effective, patient‑focused pharmaceutical care
  • Participate in the clinical/ward pharmacy service; where appropriate and necessary to practice as a prescriber in area of own expertise, provide direct high quality care to patients
  • Ensure appropriate and timely supply of medication to patients in conjunction with dispensary staff and participate in discharge planning
  • Provide patient education and counselling schemes for all patients/carers; participate in the POD scheme
  • Practice as an independent prescriber in area of own expertise, within scope of practice; liaise with other pharmacists, doctors and GPs to ensure efficient transfer of clinical and medicines management issues
  • Participate in Trust adverse incident reporting scheme
Financial management
  • Support the Principal Pharmacist in monitoring drug expenditure within the Care Group and provide accurate expenditure information, with appropriate analysis, to the Clinical Director and General Manager
  • Identify areas of potential cost‑savings and implement systems to realise savings and contain prescribing costs
  • Use horizon scanning techniques to identify future high cost medications
  • Support the development and implementation of policies to control drug expenditure and ensure cost‑effective prescribing
  • Educate other healthcare professionals on the costs associated with drug therapy and promote evidence‑based, cost‑effective prescribing within the care group
  • Attend Care Group or Specialty financial meetings when required and work across traditional boundaries (primary and secondary care)
  • Optimise the use of homecare providers to ensure VAT savings are realised as necessary
People management & performance
  • Lead, coach and manage the performance of junior staff in line with good people management practices, ensuring excellence is recognised and underperformance is addressed
  • Participate in regular performance appraisal meetings and ensure line reports have clear objectives and development plans
  • Ensure direct reports are compliant with all statutory, mandatory training and professional training requirements; manage absences of direct reports including sickness in line with Trust policy
  • Support recruitment of the team in line with the Trust's recruitment policy and process; identify talent and support the internal talent management process to attract, retain and succession‑plan for your people
  • Maintain overall wellbeing of the team and continuously support improvement of morale, implementing a culture of zero‑tolerance for bullying and harassment
  • Teach and supervise students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels; act as postgraduate tutor for Diploma students and tutor for trainee pharmacists
  • Participate in recruitment and selection of pharmacy students, trainee pharmacists and junior pharmacists as needed; regularly train, supervise and assess at ward level junior pharmacy staff and pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, trainee pharmacists and students
  • In‑service clinical pharmacy training of all pharmacy staff; undertake CPD to ensure knowledge is continually updated; participate in induction, training and development of medical, nursing and other healthcare staff
Research and service development
  • Lead, participate in and co‑ordinate relevant research or audit projects; publish and present results and outcomes of own research and audits locally, nationally or internationally where appropriate
  • Coordinate clinical trial nursing and pharmacy staff with regards to monitoring and continuing supply of trial medicines to patients
