Job description

426039 - Bioinformatics Principal/Senior Scientist (Bioinformatic Analyst), Respiratory Immunology and Inflammation Research Unit

Our Respiratory, Immunology and Inflammation (RII) Analytic team has an exciting opening for a Bioinformatics Scientist to join our team. This role offers the chance to significantly contribute to the discovery and development of new treatments for a variety of diseases with unmet clinical need. You will work closely with teams throughout the department, delivering crucial data and analytics to guide project direction and strategy whilst simultaneously embodying and championing our culture.

We are looking for a passionate, innovative, and technically proficient bioinformatician eager to expand their existing data and analytics expertise within the biological field. You will be tasked with delivering value and impact through undertaking deep bioinformatic analyses, provisioning core omics data outputs, visualisations and insight, and promoting digital proficiency throughout our department, all with a focus to deliver new medicines to patients faster, and better.

Please note that depending on applicants’ level of experience, this position may be considered at either the G8 or G7 level.

We create a place where people can grow, be their best, be safe, and feel welcome, valued and included. We offer a competitive salary, an annual bonus based on company performance, healthcare and wellbeing programmes, pension plan membership, and shares and savings programme.

We embrace modern work practises; our Performance with Choice programme offers a hybrid working model, empowering you to find the optimal balance between remote and in-office work.

In this role you will

  • Implement bioinformatic analytic workflows to deliver RNA sequencing data, differential gene expression and pathway analysis from first principles, and potential to expand into single cell and other cutting-edge technologies
  • Explore and develop bespoke bioinformatic solutions, unique data visualisations, and innovative data wrangling approaches/pipelines
  • Combine your analytic skills and biological knowledge to maximise impact in progressing new medicine opportunities
  • Foster and accelerate continuous learning in digital fluency throughout the department
  • Collaborate with cross-functional analytic teams to design and implement computational solutions that address scientific challenges
  • Contribute to shape the strategy and ever-evolving future directions of the Respiratory and Immunology Analytic team
  • Maintain a high level of documentation for all experimental work, in line with data integrity standards

Why you?

Basic Qualifications & Skills:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • PhD in Cell Biology, Pharmacology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Computational Biology or other closely related biological discipline and/or familiarity with biological drug discovery and development through significant experience in a pharmaceutical R&D department
  • Proficiency using programming languages such as R or Python to explore and analyse complex biological datasets
  • Experience with high-performance computing environments and bioinformatics tools
  • Evidence of having run end-to-end analysis of transcriptomic datasets from QC of raw data through to delivery of biological insights and impact
  • Strong understanding of biological concepts and statistical methods
  • Experience using generative AI tools to extract and summarise knowledge, or leveraging as a digital ‘thought partner’ to accelerate and enhance your work
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively present scientific findings to internal and external stakeholders in a balanced, clear, and precise manner
  • Excellent networking and collaborative skills with a proven track record of success in multidisciplinary team environments
  • Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

Please note the following skills are not necessary, just preferred, if you do not have them, please still apply:

  • Experience of running deep analytic pipelines across the output from next generation sequencing technologies such as single-cell or spatial omics
  • Understanding of key AIML concepts, particularly in relation to drug discovery and development, and/or experience building machine learning models
  • Proficiency in complex data visualisation utilising dashboarding tools such as Spotfire, PowerBI or Tableau
  • Prior experience generating assay data in a biological laboratory setting (such as flow cytometry, protein assessment techniques, transcriptomics) and developing experimental methodology and system data outputs
