Healthcare Assistant / Receptionist - Sexual Health

Band 3

We require a talented and committed HCA to fill the Band 3 role at Hereford providing high quality support to patients living with HIV. The candidate will also be required to work at our Worcestershire Royal Hospital site on occasions.

The appointed candidate will support the HIV CNS and the Consultant in effectively managing a highly complex clinical caseload. This involves prioritizing needs to ensure that an efficient service is provided. You will help support the team looking after patients undergoing assessment and treatment of HIV.

You will work as a member of the multi-professional team supporting consultants and nurse-led clinics.

This role includes providing reception duties and booking appointments as appropriate.

The hours for this position are flexible but must be worked over 2 days a week. On a Thursday you will be working in the clinic at Worcestershire Royal Hospital and another day will be working in the Clinic at Hereford Hospital.

This post holder will work very closely with WAHT team in particular to develop ways to encourage patients to access the HIV service.

Main duties of the job

To accompany patients where clinical support is indicated.

Taking and recording and monitoring of patient observations to include, blood pressure, pulse, oxygen saturations, temperature and respirations. This includes accurate calculation and recording of NEWS 2 (early warning score) and escalation to registered staff as indicated by score.

Blood Glucose Monitoring.

Undertake asymptomatic sexual health screening as directed by the CNS.

To work within the phlebotomy service when required.

To cover reception duties and book appointments as appropriate.

To answer telephone calls, bleep etc. and take messages informing appropriate persons of the call or bleep received.

To assist in the transferring of patients using correct manual handling techniques and equipment as appropriate.

Answ er the telephone, refer to appropriate person.

Answer bleeps, taking accurate messages and relay to appropriate person.

Be aware of the need to greet visitors to the ward/department and ascertain the purpose of their visit.

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of health and safety at work in order to maintain a safe environment.

Reception/telephone duties.

Preparing notes - using both electronic and manual systems.

Assist in the preparation of medical and nursing notes for clinics.

Job responsibilities

To respond to patient requests for non-clinical information.

To respond appropriately to clinical emergencies.

To cover reception duties and book appointments as appropriate.

To answer telephone calls, bleep etc. and take messages informing appropriate persons of the call or bleep received.

To assist in the transferring of patients using correct manual handling techniques and equipment as appropriate.

To attend to the activities of daily living needs of patients e.g. mobility, if required.

To report immediately to the Nurse in Charge any observed change in a patient’s condition or any concern expressed by a patient about nursing care or medical treatment.

Demonstrate knowledge of Health and Safety at work in order to maintain a safe environment.

Communication and relationships:

The Healthcare Assistants relationship with both staff and patients should be discreet, bearing in mind that all information regarding patients must be kept confidential.

Report to the nurse in charge of the ward/department matters of concern relating to patients and the ward/department environment.

Answ er the telephone, refer to appropriate person.

Answer bleeps, taking accurate messages and relay to appropriate person.

Attend ward/department meetings when appropriate.

Be aware of the need to greet visitors to the ward/department and ascertain the purpose of their visit.

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of health and safety at work in order to maintain a safe environment.

To ensure the privacy and dignity of patients at all times.

Cleaning:

Maintain tidiness and cleanliness of areas and equipment as instructed and complete all necessary paperwork relating to this in line with Trust Guidelines.

Clerical duties:

Undertake a range of clerical duties service, this may involve:

o Reception/telephone duties.

o Stock Control.

o Preparing notes - using both electronic and manual systems.

o Assist in the preparation of medical and nursing notes for clinics.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • NVQ Level 3 in Direct Care, or equivalent.
  • Key Skills literacy/numeracy or equivalent.
  • Venepuncture Certificate.
  • Care certificate.
  • NVQ Assessor Qualification.
Experience
  • Previous experience in a caring environment.
  • Experience of working within outpatients.
  • Previous administration experience.
Other Job Requirements
  • Ability to undertake manual handling and movement tasks.
  • Able to travel countywide / cross-sites.
