Head of Media/Film and Music Technology

Kensington and Chelsea

The Role

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and effective Head of Department to join our vibrant and ambitious college.

Our commitment is to provide the best possible education for every student that we serve. We are a fully inclusive Sixth Form College with a diverse and multi-cultural student body of 1100 16 to 19-year old Sixth Form students and 110 members of staff.

Media Studies A Level: This course delves into various forms of media, including TV, film, radio, music, internet, magazines, newspapers, and games. Students analyze how media industries operate and engage in media production projects.

Film Studies A Level: Students explore a wide range of films, from mainstream American to contemporary British and global cinema. The course covers the evolution of film and includes practical components like filmmaking and screenwriting.

Music Technology BTEC National Diploma Level 3: This program focuses on music production, sound engineering, and related technologies. Students gain hands-on experience in creating and recording music, preparing them for careers in the music industry.

The college has recently invested in state-of-the-art facilities for its media and creative arts programs, including digital sound and lighting systems, digital cameras, and music recording studios. These enhancements aim to provide an industry-standard learning environment.

The successful candidate will have a relevant degree and teaching qualification. They will teach across our Film and Media A level curriculum; will promote a purposeful learning environment; deliver engaging lessons and foster a creative and innovative learning environment, with a strong focus on student progress.

This role would suit an experienced teacher seeking to move from a school to a 16-19 environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Regularly set performance targets for staff and students
  • Review the department resources and manage the department budget
  • Complete annual quality improvement plans and subject area self-assessment
  • Complete internal and external exam data analysis
  • Hold regular department meetings for all members of the team to contribute and share good practice and delegate responsibilities effectively within the development
  • Maintain an overview of the media and film landscape in relation to skills development
  • Set sufficient work for formal assessment such that students’ understanding can be regularly checked, so that they can be fully prepared for the demands of public assessment through examination and/or or NEA coursework, in accordance with the College formal assessment policy.
  • Mark, monitor and return work within an optimal and agreed time span providing constructive oral and/or written feedback which clearly indicates and integrates strategies for improvement.
  • Make use of formative and summative assessment to secure excellent student progress.
  • Use relevant data to monitor progress, set targets, and plan subsequent lessons.
  • Give students regular high-quality feedback, both orally and through accurate marking, and enable students to respond to the feedback and improve their understanding.
  • Assess work according to College and subject area policies and consistently with examination and/or coursework assessment criteria.
  • Complete formal reports on students according to the College reporting systems and the reporting calendar, making full use of the College electronic tracking and review system to motivate excellent progress.
  • Attend parents’ evenings according to the College calendar to keep students’ families and/or their carers informed about their progress.
  • Have a clear understanding of the needs of all learners, including those with special educational needs; those of high ability; those with English as an additional language; those with disabilities; and be able to use and evaluate distinctive teaching approaches to engage and support them.

Qualifications and Training:

  • Hold QTS (or equivalent) and a relevant undergraduate degree
  • ECTs welcome to apply – bespoke ECT induction

Experience:

  • Have planned and taught lessons that enabled students to make good progress
  • Have successful teaching experience in the secondary or further education sectors (can be teaching practice)

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Appropriate specialist subject knowledge which meets demands of curriculum
  • Knowledge of National Curriculum requirements at KS5
  • Be able to write and implement effective lesson plans
  • Know how to create lesson resources that support high quality learning
  • Good knowledge of the importance of assessment practices
  • Be able to work as part of a team and to develop and maintain positive relationships with staff
  • Have a good level of knowledge of ICT skills, ideally including innovative use of interactive whiteboards
