Specialist Biomedical Scientist Microbiology

Are you an experienced Microbiology Biomedical scientist with a passion to be part of a forward thinking, professional and dedicated team committed to patient care? UHCW has the perfect opportunity for you.

We are looking for a Biomedical scientist with an IBMS Specialist diploma or completed log book in Microbiology to join our team as a specialist biomedical scientist.

The position will require you to work across 2 shifts (0800-1600/1300-2100) Monday to Sunday and take part in the on-call rota (2100-0100).

Effective collaboration with colleagues of different grades both operational and clinical is an essential part of the role.

Main duties of the job

As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Microbiology the post holder is responsible for the delegated tasks required for the delivery of a fit-for-purpose medical laboratory service analysing and reporting on, blood, urine, faeces and other body materials to achieve the objectives of efficient and effective patient care, and effective resource management within the hospital.

The post holder will oversee specialist areas of the Microbiology service either working alone or as part of a small team.

The postholder will be responsible for the day to day operations of a specified bench and to collaborate with colleagues to ensure all benches are staffed appropriately and any issues are resolved swiftly.

Job responsibilities
  • Daily perform routine and specialised diagnostic services on patient or environmental samples containing potentially infectious material.
  • To carry out routine maintenance on analytical equipment as required and in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • To carry out equipment and method troubleshooting, advise the Section Manager of situations requiring further action, work with service engineers on fault resolution.
  • To prepare, store and use reagents required for laboratory investigations.
  • To perform manual, semi-automated and fully-automated laboratory investigations to exacting medical and scientific standards according to Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Interpretation of diagnostic investigations and be responsible for the validity of results and ensure accuracy and precision as specified by laboratory protocols and procedures
  • To report to the Section Manager any instance or event which may cause a service delivery failure, but be fully involved in the resolution of such events.
  • To develop and investigate new techniques or analysers as required by the changing needs of the service.
  • To ensure that all results are reported within the agreed turnaround time and to take remedial action, for example communicating appropriately with colleagues and managers.
  • Work to meet laboratory performance targets as directed by senior staff.
  • To use departmental resources efficiently and ensure reagents and consumables are ordered when approaching minimum stock levels.
  • To participate in the review and update of Standard Operating Procedures and health and safety documentation including COSHH and workplace risk assessments by commenting or proposing changes.
