Qualifications

  • HCPC Registration is mandatory.
  • MSc or equivalent in relevant discipline is preferred.
  • 2+ years of supervisory experience in a Cellular Pathology laboratory required.
  • IBMS Diploma in Histological Dissection is essential.
  • 5+ years' experience in Cellular Pathology expected.

  • Oversee dissection areas in Histopathology closely with clinical leads.

Main duties of the job
  • Responsibility for the dissection areas of Histopathology working in close collaboration with the clinical specialty leads to manage the workload.
  • Participate in surgical dissection of diagnostic histopathology specimens with a particular focus on category D-E
  • Provide and co-ordinate specialist clinical technical services that may include research and audit samples.
  • To provide the necessary training, management and supervision to staff within the section and visiting staff as required (medical, scientific and other staff)
  • Supervise and appraise all relevant levels of staff within the department.
  • Manage the maintenance of robust systems of clinical governance in place for all teams in their area.
  • To develop the service, implementing new ideas to ensure that the roles change according to the changing clinical and research needs under the guidance of medical staff and the management team.
  • May represent Pathology or the Trust for issues relating to their specialist area.

NWLP Induction

The NWLP induction will run on the first Monday of each month (provided it does not fall on a bank holiday) and includes laboratory training (for relevant laboratory roles). All new staff must attend the NWLP induction during their first week with NWLP.

Education
  • HCPC Registration
  • MSc or FIBMS in relevant discipline
  • Minimum 2 years' supervisory experience in a Cellular Pathology laboratory including managing operational workflows and staff supervision
  • IBMS Diploma of Expert Practice in Histological Dissection
  • Minimum of 5 years' post-HCPC registration experience in Cellular Pathology, including expert histological dissection
  • Recognised management qualification
  • IBMS Advanced Specialist Diploma in Histological Dissection
Skills
  • Technical competence and ability to supervise and manage staff in a specialist section of the laboratory.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently perform advanced histological dissection of high-complexity specimens (e.g., Category D and E).
  • Proven record of supervising and mentoring staff in advanced dissection techniques
  • Proficient in laboratory management, including creating and implementing rotas, managing resources, and overseeing quality control and turnaround times
  • Advanced knowledge of quality management systems, including ISO 15189 compliance, audit management, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ability to develop personal IT skills as required
  • Ability to carry out research and development projects
Experience
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in a Cellular Pathology laboratory, with at least 3 years performing high-complexity specimen dissections (Category D and E).
  • Evidence of experience conducting formal training sessions for junior staff and rotating junior doctors on complex specimen handling and dissection techniques.
  • Proven record of successfully managing performance and conducting appraisals for staff.
  • High level of knowledge of all aspect of specialist subject.
  • Previous experience in a large busy pathology laboratory
  • Experience of performing and presenting clinical audit
  • Experience of delivering training to resident doctors
